Pulled intercostal muscle
I had a bad cough about 2-3 weeks ago, and coughed so much I've pulled a muscle in my ribs
Question is, how long should I rest it for? I've not really rested it at all as I have horses to look after so still been mucking out, exercising the horse and going to the gym or running in the evenings (although have been taking the cardio a little easier as it's been hard to breathe in deeply cos of the pain!). It's still hurting quite a lot, sitting up from lying down is a killer!
Does this type of thing always take ages to heal? Have to admit to being slightly naughty and using Ibuprofen to mask the pain a bit so I can carry on training but it does only do so much!
Pulled Intercostal Muscle
I pulled an intercostal muscle before from a severe twist after being nearly thrown from a LAV hatch. The time it takes to heal the intercostal muscles depends on how much you rest, as you use your chest for many things from Breathing, turning your body, reaching out or lifting your arm, etc. This alone is already aggravating the injury.
you need to try and refrain from any major activity (particularly upper body and cardio) that could cause stress or inflammation to the area. The more activity you do the longer it will take to heal. Mine took 6 weeks plus to fully heal with a lot of Rest, Ice, and Compression on down time, because I was on the job in full kit most of the time unfortunately.
Ibuprofen is a good anti inflamatory, however, if you are training after taking it, be very careful as to not deepen your injury. It will simply take longer to heal.
Rest, Ice, Compression.
I would consult with a doctor after a few days if the pain does not decrease using the above method.

Pulled it some 2 months ago, then again 3 weeks ago.
Takes long time to heal, nothing you can do about it.
I got Ketoprofin 100 mg and Norflex 100 mg.
Norflex will help the muscles to relax and is helpping a lot.
Make sure you are not twisting and turning while asleep.
Take it easy with the gym as it will only make it worse.
It looks like it will re-occure easily.

Guess resting it is the key then, but I'm so bad at taking it easy unless I'm in agony! Just got back to training after having been on a ban from the gym by the physio as I'd pulled everything in my back after an accident with the horse (cervical/thoracic and lumbar spine was all painful!) so I was hoping to pick up again as I've lost a bit of fitness.
Will take it steady and not expect miraculous recovery in that case! Ta guys
