Default Italians lead taskforce on piracy in the GOA

    Italy leads EU NAVFOR

ITALY'S navy has taken over command of the European Union Naval Force's anti-piracy fleet.

Italian Rear Admiral Giovanni Gumiero took over from Dutch Rear Admiral Pieter Biendt in a ceremony off Djibouti yesterday. The rold is regularly rotated.

The commanders exchanged information about the anti-piracy mission Operation Atalanta. Gumiero thanked the Dutch navy and promised to continue its work.

“The task force has achieved remarkable results so far, and I am confident that with their motivation and dedication we can further enhance our effectiveness, thus granting continuity to EU efforts in establishing freedom and security at sea in this region of the world,” he said.

The Italian commander will lead the EU NAVFOR fleet for four months aboard the auxiliary ship Etna.

    Mass,

not all mate, but for an Admiral to be based on a supply vessel i find bizarre, surely the Italians can find a Destroyer for the Admiral to based on??

Eminently sensible in my view - he is being environmentally friendly by saving on AVTUR being on said supply ship - as each time a grey funnel from EUNAVFOR needs a suck of juice they need to come to him - so the skippers can pop onboard and have a chat with him, get the low down on tasking and pose for the camera - very copenhagen friendly - Bravo the Italians for taking the lead...........

However it would be hysterical if the americans did that to one of their 4 stars - sorry sir no carriers available but we do have a supply ship you can command from.......... it would be all over Sky news and CNN quicker than you can catch a somali pirate
