3rg are now taking bookings for the soon to be launched 8269 City and Guilds Maritime Security Operative (MSO) course.
The New City & Guilds 8269 MSO course has been developed to meet the needs of the ISO28007 and is expected to be released on the 1st June 2013. The course will be accredited at level 3 of the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) which is regulated by Ofqual, and therefore Enhanced Learning Credits can be used.
Along with other subject matter experts, 3rg has been directly involved in the development of the units, which consist of:
Unit 1 – Understand the Maritime Security Industry.
Unit 2 – Understand Maritime Pre-deployment Planning & Procedures.
Unit 3 – Understand Maritime Security Operating Procedures.
Unit 4 – Understand Maritime Incident Management & Post Operational Procedures.
3rg also offer a Fast Track course for those individuals with prior MSO training, please contact 3rg for further details.
C&Gs are working with the MCA to ensure the MSO 8269 qualification also satisfies the syllabus for personnel in designated security duties (PDSD) as required by the STCW Convention (as amended in Manila 2010) Regulation VI/6.

Could you advise me how the course is so expensive when certification is only £90 pp through city and guilds? I have heard this course is all powerpoint presentation, and inside with no practical apart from a very basic chart lesson. I did hear the other practical that happens was CQB ship clearing drills inside the classroom/office.
Also you are a training company how can you train on some particular subjects if you are not an operational company?
Easy!!! i understand units 1 to 4 can I have a certificate
Again mso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
Most Brit companies will be going down this route guys so if you want to continue in maritime do the course.
But please avoid 3rg. They have been actively pushing this into the industry for a while. Don't reward their efforts with your hard earned money. Find a cheap alternative, there will be some soon enough.
Wilplan training in Wigan are also offering a 2 day version to MSO,s who can prove their experience as well as the normal 4/5 day version.
Are you actually required to have this qualification to work in the MARSEC industry now?
As previously stated by myself on this forum this will be the way forward and the course has the blessing of the MCA. Leedsrhinos i know you did the old MSO course with G4S on another thread and i did tell abt this course coming into effect. However some companies are not adapting as yet but in time this will be an industry minimum qual with STCW95 for maritime.
I remember you mentioning it Trublue. I know a couple of companies are pushing it but as far as I knew it wasnt an actual requirement for employment.
G4S are preparing the course in the next month or so.
It just seems in the security industry the goal posts change every 5 mins and as soon as someone has an idea of a skill/ course then 500 course providers invent courses and make completion of them a requirement to work for them when actually they are not needed.
