Homer.....others will add to this, but generally they are paramedics or SF medics or equivelant who then do a CP course, I also know of some Doctors who are also CP badged.

ooh thats a can of worms Homer lol

I think you answered your own question in part

It all depends on the company and the tasking

Some guys are very well qualified medics with no cp qual and are static medics (usually but not always)

Some are very experienced CPO/PSD with a MIRA course and pick things up on the job

Some are paramedics with cp like you said

Companies now a days seem to favour the CP qual with the "medic" bit being what the operator claims - aslong as they say they are a medic then the company ticks the box as in most cases the medical side is the operators responsibility for insurance kit training etc

Alot of the medics are ex military RAMC/RN/RM/SF etc from the UK side, with the yanks tending to be more enquisitive on the medical quals and demand EMT-P/18D etc

The problem is what is a medic? Ideally its a mix of trauma and primary care quals and experience so the can patch you up and cure your knee pain/cough/knob rot etc

So if you want to become a medic then the question is more based on you and wether or not you think a 5 day course qualifies you to be a medic in which case crack on, or if indeed you want to spend thousands and years in training to get a proper qual and the experience with it.

If you are an operator which I am guessing you are then ask yourself this, if I was ill/twatted then what type of medic would I like to see turn up and start cutting my clothes off!

Companies these days are feeling the pinch as the gold rush is over, and the first thing primes and even the security coys are cutting are pucker medics unless they are willing to go on a wagon or act as a PPO. Static sites are picking up in afghan and I think they will in Iraq too once the US start pullng out from their FOBs etc, however alot of medics are working as operators and then get pinged for the medic bit in their down time.

Have a look at DMI (Deployment Medicine International) for further advice and some good courses. John is a member of the forums and he posts under the medic section quite abit, well worth a PM or a call.

I know I havent highlighted the route in but to be fair there isnt one really, its a mix match of skills and quals and no such thing on paper as a CP Medic.

Hope this has helped somewhat, and good luck, even as an operator you can never have enough med skills. As a baseline every operator should have at least MARCH and 9 Lines in their head for when the schiesse hits the fan.

    Taff

Homer if your still in Afghan lands, whilst your searching for a course. Take a walk down to the CSH if possible, and ask about some volunteer work in the ER. A coleague of mine did this for a few months prior to attending a CP Medic course and his knowledge was quite considerable... I wish you luck in your search. Take a look at Exmed down in Hereford. They do a Remote medic program that can be broken into bite size chunks. Allowing you to work if the rotation allows...
