Hi folks , I am looking for a bit info in relation to a simple to fit /use and monitor gsm type tracker , Ive seen ones on ebay that come with software that you can monitor yourself using gps .
I know there is a system where you register a sim card ,fit it in tracker and then pay so much for every ping you make via a subscribed website.
thanks fluffy

Yes its called a mobile phone
You wire the phones gubbins into the DC of the car (some sort of resistor required). Put the phone on 'Auto Answer' register the sim with a GSM tracking site ,and your away. If you want to eaves drop on the car, just ring the phone and you have chat too.

Hi,
Although an older thread I thought I would comment.
Yes you can use any mobile phone and add it to one of the tracking sites. However this is not the ideal solution and let me explain why.
When these providers ask for a position it is the last position the device logged on the network. This of course does not give you a history. And at Xp per request if you get it reporting in repeatedly it soon becomes very expensive. Also remember phones will not have power manegment on board which means a very limited operational battery life for the device..
I would suggest the best solution is a purpose built dedicated unit. This unit should get the cell tower details and then send this for a location request to a "server". This is then logged and you can view this as a history at a later date. This should be part of a service agreement and not priced per location request. That method is out of date and very very expensive.
With power management its possible to get small devices to last months reporting in this manner.
Hope that was useful to someone.

Nowadays, there are some GPS tracker devices which can send you the position by cell phone, and you can locate it on the website, but I don't think you need to pay for that service, just use google earth. It's free.
That is however completely different to a "gsm tracker". A Gsm tracker is basing its location information on its relative position in the the cell network.
A Gps tracker is using gps to gain position information to send to you (usually using the cell network as the method to deliver this information).

Ah yes, this is the eloc from simlogic , or known as the enduro from trackingtheworld , Got one in front of me i have been testing from the manufacturer, not the worst device I have ever used. The version on the site comes from a company in the states called trackingtheworld .
To note this device is on ebay for £200 from one of their distributors so might be worth shopping around!
Also this is not a gsm tracker although the sim you are to put in the device could be use on "track my mobile" style sites to get cell positions.
