    Default Mobile Phone Tracking

    Share
Got a request this morning asking:

'can you track a mobile without installing any software etc? '

I think the customer wants James Bond style geo-location on the phone obviously without the knowledge of the owner.

I obviously replied with a 'Thats probably illegal, no.' but the 007 in me wondered about the subject. I know it can be done...given the resources of GCHQ etc...thoughts?

Law Enforcement can and do by compelling mobile phone carriers to ping cell towers, for example, in the states the No Such Agency harvest as many as 5 billion records daily, without warrants, to track mobile phones across the world (source Edward Snowdon).

For a private individual, here in the UK, who is not the owner of the said mobile phone then it is illegal.

    Exactly right.

There are apps that can be put on targets phone, assuming you can get 'hands on', but without the bill payers permission, illegal. If it's a concerned parent, putting the app on his kids phone, that he's paying the bill for, fair enough.

Husband on wifes phone or vice versa...is down to who'se paying the contract.

There IS hardware to do the job, if the guy's got the budget of a small, 3rd world country, and a flexible attitude towards doing jail time.

Easily done in the private sector, and yes it's illegal without the owners consent.

There are ways to do it with low chance of being caught, but it remains illegal no matter how sneaky you are.

Heard some rumours of a couple of outfits offering this. Money up front, not cheap and they advise it's a one off whether it works or not. Again rumours, but some good, some bad results. The fact that it's a WU transfer they want and the risk involved makes me shudder. Nothing beats a softly softly approach and boots on the ground.

    >Discreet cough,

Note that if installed on a target's phone without their knowledge, you could be sharing time with certain news of the screws hacks, and the target WILL rumble it if they're paying the bill, 'cos data charges can be horrific.

    ....so I've heard anyway.

Cough caught, vis, just putting it out there as a warning. The info I got was when working abroad for another X company.

This place needs a private section. Not to sell but to allow guidance on what not to do. A friend of mine has just set up and spent much money on google advertising, the amount of calls ref stupid stuff is unbelievable. I am aware that the market is becoming saturated, if not so already and guys/girls want to to make an impression despite the threat of licensing, it's business. I work for a couple of women right now who have done the mil/cvl thing for more than 20 years and they are very much aware of the fast tech coming in and it is not a threat to them. They are amazing when it comes ground work and I only hope to have 50% of their capability when I'm their age.

VERY good idea. The Private Section would be useful for a variety of purposes. Nothing illicit, but could have material that should just not be in general public domain. Good suggestion niallyan.
