I am only being paid £6.00 an hour for night security job.

I currently work in a 52 room rented apartment block at weekends as hired security through the night. There are a lot of stag do’s/hen do’s . Drug uses and even prostitutes.

There used to be two of us working at the same time, until they decided to cut out the other guy and just use me. I initially refused to work at the start for safety reasons as I don’t like to confront 10 drunk lads playing loud music and kicking off in a room without back up. Even though I have good communication skills. I know one day it will all end in tears.

I recently checked my online banking and noticed a reduction in wages from last year which now add up to £6.00 per hour. 50p less than minimum wage. I work on a self employed contract for an agency and they told me yes they are now paying me £6.00 an hour because the apartments kept bartering down the price to renew the contract.
Would it be wise and to just quit. Go on the dole and look for something better.

Mate thats disgusting behaviour from your employer, ask yourself a question: am I only worth £6.00 per hour?

I'm guessing not.

Walk, but sue them for the deducted pay. They can't alter your contract without permission

Search (for a new job)
Sue (for the money lost)
Scape (from a sure "accident about to happen" even more self employed)

Thanks for advice. I will be leaving. With regards to sue them. I can't find anything written on the contract/application with an agreed fee I would be paid. I remember verbally what was said and what was written on the job site and this was equivalent of the national minimum wage. I think it would be my word against theirs.

If they are paying below minimum wage then there's a good chance they not paying for other necessities like insurance etc...

The jobs are out there, and by the sounds of the environment you've been working in you will have some great transferable skills. Good luck

Mate, that sounds like a genuinely dangerous job, far more threat there than some of the higher paid CP jobs in London during the summer months (Harrods shopping bag carriers)

I guess you came on here already knowing the answer to your question, but you probably feel a lot better about it with the support and advice given, you sound like a good egg, good luck with your next job.

If you walk you will be considered to be "intentionally unemployed" and you will not qualify for dole money. They phrase you need to use is "constructive dismissal" ie. they have forced you to leave by unacceptable working conditions.
Before you do anything talk to ACAS 0300 123 1100 get advice from them on dealing with it, more importantly get it on record that you got advice on the illegality of your situation. That gives you back-up if you have to claim benefits. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau may also have someone that specialises in employment issues, they may even have a free solicitor.
Put your issues in writing to the employment agency, including that you are being paid below minimum wage and that the risks are unacceptable for lone working. Make it clear that your safety is at serious risk. Putting this in writing (keep a copy) also gives you back-up when claiming benefits.

You may also consider talking to your local police intelligence officer to point them in the direction of some of the offenders (particularly the dealers) , they might even pay you for information. Make sure it is only the intelligence officer you talk to as they will keep their source confidential. Although be aware that you would still be at risk as people take guesses at where the information came from.

Walk !

...but before you go, can you give us the address ?

Thanks for all the detailed reply's. You are all generally saying what I have been told from friends/family for the last 18 months - find another bloody job, in which I am now pro actively doing. This £6.00 thing confirmed I may as well be bent over a table and shafted up the bum.

On a lighter note yes stag do's do come down to reception and seem to think I know all about where to find the drugs/ whore houses. I have no idea! The only smarties I know about are the ones you can buy at the sweet shop up the road!

I'll draw a line under this now and learn from it. Only onwards and upwards from now on if I continue in this industry!

Hi..Not sure what part of the Country you are working in, but it would be interesting to know if it is a large or small company you work for and I feel, like others you should report the illegal activities and you should report the company too the SIA. Then in wishful thinking, hope the SIA will do their job and put up a black list on their site for rookie's & others to know who to stay away from ie; name & shame bad companies and keep new guys away from the Sharks, then maybe some of these Sharks will go out of business. The whole idea of the SIA, was to keep the crooks & criminals off the Pub, Club doors and out of the security industry, yer right. So we have signed up and paid to get our wonderful badges and like many when you first start, you think you will get that wonderful job, your trainer BS about. Well once you get your badge the fairy-tale stops there and No thanks to the SIA, who have got these walking customer service adverts to show the government they are doing their bit to keep their jobs in the SIA. It is just a shame they cannot remember to look after the badge holders from Ass-Hole companies that like ripping people off, maybe one day they may get around to checking out companies that state they are in the Security Industry, I do feel for those good & excellent companies that get under cut by thugs & unlawful companies, as the more legitimate lawful & morale companies, would have not only have had two up on this job, but would have cleaned the place up. As for you young man, try your hand at retail or manned guarding with a large firm. Good Luck & take care...From one who is old & cynical...Jen

If you still ain't done anything about it all more fool you

Easy to say. We don't know the guy's financial position. He said he's looking for something else, the sensible option is to bite the bullet and continue to work until that something else is found. I don't see anything wrong with that. Some people, and I include myself in that, would rather work than suck on the government's titty.

hello

firstly £6.50 is the minnimum wage,
secondly how long have you worked with them for this ammount,
there is a loophole for them, if you have worked with them for more than a few weeks, then they can claim you accepted this so therefore may not have a case to sue, but maybe can claim back pay, but take my advice don't delay, go to a citizens advice.

Anyone else remember when the SIA came into being and we were promised that when we got our training and license we'd be on £20 an hour. That worked out well didn't it.

Nope. Never did but it sounded good at the time. Then companies started saying 'training will be provided' and the dole started putting people through the course so now we have inexperienced people in the industry and the experienced guys working for buttons. Thanks SIA
