The ironic thing is that you can be more vigilant by engaging the passengers, the ones that are just nervous about travel are usually put at ease fairly readily so the ones that are still nervous when greeted pleasantly are more worthy of closer attention.

As one who has worked aviation security, I can confirm most are jumped up rat bags. The job ought to be about being helpful, smoothing the process, not making some poor stressed out granny have a breakdown.
Remind the principal that we have a plane to catch, suggest we pick a couple of fans out for a quick one to one and then get a move on. Good photo op with some delighted fans, easy to control the situation. Have one of my team console the disappointed ones that get left out.

Though I seem to recall that wearing a uniform or insignia with intent to deceive is already illegal in the UK?
