On Tuesday, a car bomb was rammed into a police compound in Baladweyne, Somalia and militants opened fire on officers, leaving at least 28 people dead, officials and witnesses said. Al-Shabaab who have links with al-Qaeda claimed responsbility for the attack.
A gun battle ensued into the early afternoon, as African Union peacekeepers and Somali troops surrounded the compound.
The death toll:
7 civilians
11 police officers
10 militants
The militants attempted to blast their way through the gate, and tried to scale the walls during the attack.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned the attack, saying his government was determined to eliminate the Islamists.
Mohamud's elected government has been in charge for just over a year and is striving to rebuild Somalia after two decades of civil war and lawlessness triggered by the overthrow of President Siad Barre in 1991.
