CCTV / Video Image Stabiliser

I've just acquired: Video Stabilization System to Reduce Camera Shake as new addittion to the toybox.

Ridiculously expensive and rare as rocking horse sh!t on the open market. Will work equally well with either live or recorded analogue / composite video signal. An absolute 'must have' toy, if your working with long lenses or unstable platform.

NOT for sale, because the chances of my laying my hands on another one are non-existent, but if anybody needs to use it, or wants to discuss hire, I'll be happy to sort something out.

V,

Is it a humbug by another name, or is it of actual benefit.
Without having it to pieces, which I'm betting you have, I can only surmise to balances the peak to peak, to minimise distortion of image, Or does it do lots of clever stuff? !!!

Lots of clever stuff. Shortform is it compares all the pixels in sequential frames, throwing away those that dont match up. Image is therefore slightly smaller than the original, but appears stable.

Designed by Qinetiq, manufactured by Ovation Systems. When first released they were selling at around £3500.00. Price has dropped, now around £2k.

Once upon a time in the broadcast industry, one of my previous employers had a different version on their exhibition stand....on a rocking horse mounted camera....with all the stand staff dressed as cowboys and indians...

Someone sneaked in before the show opened, having bunged the security guy a smoke, and dumped a bucket of horseshit from a local stable under it. Took them a half hour to work out why people were pissing themselves laughing as they passed the stand....

One of my video editing suites, Sony Vegas, has a stabilization mode which I has never tried till today. It works quite well but looses a load more of the image than the example above. I will have a play and post some video.

The Ovation / Qinetiq kit is one the neatest solutions. BUT, it only works on analogue video. There were a few mechanical rigs around in film / tv industry, based around a variety of gyro / gimbal mounts, some of which were just odd if not downright dangerous.

I once used a 60:300mm ? Schwem Gyrozoom that felt as if I was wrestling a python.
