cheaper than the vets doggy type cures

are there any good safe herbal alternatives to pain killers for dogs, mines just come into season and grumbing and moaning away and her belly is absolutley boiling hot to touch
 
i feed my lab eukanuba dry food and its gr8 food he been on it from pup he broke his knee when he was about 5 months old and his recovery was very quick and vet put it mainly down to his diet. lyk yours annie mine loves raw carrot and apple.

1 question i do have is wat is best for wasp stings on dogs im training mine for narcotic searches and wen a was out with him a sent him in the bushes and he came out covered in wasps it took me an hour to pull all the stings out.
 
remove the stings so they do not continue to leak poison into your dog use nails or credit card something with a defined sharp edge, ice pack it or poltice ie thick paste of baking soda and water.... keep an eye out for alergic reaction, if it occurs give antihistamines and get it to a vet asap

this happend a whille ago now like but a did the picking out and took him to vets anyway but thanks for the baking soda advice as am sure this wont be the last time he cops it from the wasps
 
was intrested to here about the garlic remadies as ave always been led to beleave garlic could be poisonous to dogs? gr8 thread tho and ave made alot of notes for future incidents

Mark, are you sure it was wasps? Normally they dont leave the stings as no barb. Only reason i am asking is that wasp and bee stings are completely opposite one being acidic the other alkaline(so i have been told) and therfor you need to know as the baking soda may make things worse if incorrect id.

yes mate it was wasps i had to brush them off him. i think wasps can detach there sting or it becomes detached when a brushed them off him am not sure.

jus to clarify tho baking soda ok for wasp stings??

for future refs tho what would you recomend for bee stings

If i remember correctly its baking soda for wasps and vinegar for bees but you may want to search that on line. Sorry i cant be more help.

Good tip is to add squashed tomato to thier food. The juice neutralises the acid in their pee, so you dont get the brown patches all over the lawn.

Thanks for that Mali you made me re-check..... so

Bees = Acidic sting you want baking soda for BEES or Aloe Vera

Wasps= Alkaline so it's vinegar for wasps!

Anyone have any good cures for an ear infection? Springers got a bit of one at the minute, really hot and red inside and horrible smelly stuff coming out of it. Been cleaning it everyday and its less whiffy but still looks a little red and feels a tad hot. She's due to be spayed on Monday so really wanted to sort it before then without a vet visit if possible
 
Well i clean their ears every few days with proper ear wipes, and have still used those but have also been using some warm water and cotton wool too, the redness is a lot less now, and a lot less whiffy stuff, she had it once before ages ago and it cleared up after a week just now worried it may stop them doing her op
 
We use a syringe (no needle!!!!) with warm soapy water, then a good rub for a miute or two, then the cotton wool. Do that twice a day and they should stay clean!
 
Try something called Thornit Annie. Its an old fashioned canker powder and you put a very light dusting on the inside of the ear. Can also be dusted on cuts and itchy spots. Lasts for ages and works very well.

Feed the boys garlic tablets to keep the bugs away - onion very bad for dogs, neat garlic also very bad (led to believe)) as I was slightly wary when first advised to give garlic tablets so did a lot of reading on it.

Have the usual vet wrap, steri strips, fast stop bleed dressings, ice snap packs, etc - it doubles as my human 1st aid kit which has been funny when ambulance turn up and find patient held together with vet wrap. And since the increase of reports of snakes in my area also make sure I have an in date pack of piriton - they have to be pure piriton.

Am always on the look out for hebal remedies, specially as Charlie has very sensitive tum (from having had parvo) and a lot of the stuff from the vets strips his tum again and he takes a long time to recover.

Feed both boys clinivet - the only food that gives Charlie a solid bum. Still use treats for training with Ollie as he gets too excited with a ball or squeaky but have weaned Charlie off treats onto ball/tuggi reward. On the very odd occasion Charlie has food treats its boiled chicken when training or we have some rice bones that they are given but maybe only a couple a month.

Rawhide treats are hardly given, Ollie isn't that interested in them and they go straight through Charlie = projectile runs!!!!

Who'd have thought the easy dosing nurofen for kids syringe could have so many uses, just took your advice aes, dog now looking a bit bemused, but brought some of the crap out, thanks!
 
No worries mate. It gets the water in deep but isn't too intrusive! A good rub see's most of the gunk massaged from the ear canal, only problem is, if you're not quick enough you could end up with a face full of canker!

I had a long haired GSD who eventually had to have the ear canal opened to make sure it couldn't collect so much gunk. Strange seeing a dog with it's ear drom half way down it's neck! Made you learn some quick cleaning tricks though!
 
anyone have any ideas of something preferably herbal that i can give my young spaniel bitch. Shes just 2 but lately after long walks (about 12 miles in woods and fields etc) she seem to be getting a really stiff back leg. Not everytime but every now and again for a day or two after she looks like shes 102 not 2. So i am wondering if there is anything that i can give her to keep her joints working well. She is quite a maniac when she gets out off the lead and can have a good run, and i am varying her excercise between long 12 mile walks, field behind the house with a tennis ball, and a 20 minute run up on the pit tops which is just good run for them all. They get 3 12 mile walks a week and then i rotate the other excercise between the long walks. She doesn't very often get 2 long walks on consecutive days. They do go swimming in the river on long walk aswell. I have checked all her paws thoroughly to make sure she hasn't got anything between her pads and they are fine, it doesn't feel hot to touch when she is stiff either.
