cheaper than the vets doggy type cures

Try or look up msm Annie. Its mostly used for horses but smaller amounts can be given to dogs. Its a powder or (I think) can come in tablet form.

Will get some links 2moz and post them.

P.s It can give the dogs a smelly bum to start with

If your dog is having the runs regular add bio-yoghurt to its feed.Its sometimes caused by a bacterial imbalance. The bio-yoghurt is a probiotic and normally sorts this problem out quickly
 
I'm not even sure that this one works but my cocker is on a diet, tubby little bugger has gotten a tad lardy over winter! He is very very food orientated, squeals like a stuck pig the second he even see's his food bowl, he has craftily taken to eating shit to supplement his lack of food whilst dieting, which is utterly gross habit. Nurse at vets told us to feed the other dogs pineapple as allegedly dogs love it but hate it second time around! Dogs did indeed enjoy the pineapple and it did seem to stop cocker consuming their deposits.... thankfully fresh pineapple isn't that expensive these days haha
 
Just a thought now the good weather is here, don't forget your piriton, good for snake bites and stings, was reminded to get mine other day as ex's cat brought him a dead snake - well it was dead when he had a heart attack after finding it in his hallway :D

By the sound of it, it was only a grass snake but in my area reports of adders are increasing every year.

You need pure piriton and get it from your local supermarket pharmacy, its half the price of branded piriton.

My eldest GSD has a dodgy knee, so he gets a glucosamine and condroitin bought from boots & i have a tub of vasiline mixed with sudocreme for cuts & bumps, the dog has an issue with his nose cracking so that combination helps a lot

i never go anywhere without a small tin of vaseline in my pocket. Use it for everything from cracked skin on dogs to cuts as it helps seal them up if you are miles from home until you can clean them properly. Damned marvelous stuff. :)
 
Kennel Cough / cough

Whats your natural remedies for this one?

Ollie has developed a cough (at least he hasn't limped for a week),

Dry cack/hack and then a huff, vet doesn't want him in, has said as long as hack is dry or brings up clear mucus he won't be issuing antibiotics, which am glad about. Mostly when moving about or excited. Vet has said could be kc or just a cough.

Have been giving him (and the other 2) chicken soup (natural antioxidents), garlic tablets (they always have these) and echinacea tablets to help with immunity. Also giving cough medicine to Ollie only.

He developed this cough on Thursday evening, went downhill rapidaly on Friday then has picked up since Sat approx 1400 hrs. Today there has been about 4/5 hacks in total, is worse in the mornings.

He had the same thing about 10 mths ago. Had it for about 5/6 days. The other 2 dogs didn't.

Not got any of them vacinated against kc but am wondering if I should now. Vet won't ocnfirm if its kc and obviously do not want to take him in and spread it. Am happier not giving antibiotics.

Ollie obviously has a bit of a weakness where kc/cough is concerned, wondering does anyone else use any natural remedies to ward kc off?
 
db1 any chance this might be an allergy rather than kennel cough. My friends border collie had a similar thing around the same time period. Also brought on when excited or running around, more of a 'huff' than a cough. Lasted for a few weeks and now she is right as rain. Whilst it was present she took dog to the vet and was told to use an anti-histimine, which seemed to help. Dog is 4yrs old and she has never had the symptoms until start of this year and then again in August. We still have no idea what she was allergic to but will watch for it again next year.
JamesMc have you also tried adding a couple of drops of cider vinegar in the dinner and either devil's claw by itself or in a root mix? Horrel and dodson do them for horses I think they also do a dog strength.

Pretty sure it was kc as the doodle developed it as well. The collie and doodle sleep with each other.

The rotti x didn't and he sleeps by himself mostly.

Will keep an eye out if it re-occurs for similar times of year or anything else though.

ok a little advice here...potassium permangenate is a great haemostatic agent but it does generate a lot of heat- while this heat does seal any bleeding it also causes a lot of pain and injury.....with eyes dont put anything in a dogs eye that you wouldnt first put in your own eye and with respect ...hydrogen peroxide is a great bleach for cleaning up wounds but dont apply it neat....should be diluted to about 2%

hi, Springers that are active tend to get wet ears and they do get infections down there. there is a product called canaural- it is a veterinary medicine and you need s script- it is the best product for ears as it treats bacteria, fungal ( common) and mites....if you use canaural and there is still a problem, scratching, smell then there is a good chance you have a foreign body down there....grass seeds etc.....
also there are two parts to the dogs ear canal a vertical bit that everyone can reach and clean out and a horizontal bit that no one can reach and clean out.....the canaural neeeds to be applied to the canal and then massaged in...you need to apply enough so that you can hear it squiching when you rub the ear at the base of the skull under the ear flap ( not the ear flap)....sorry if this is confusing i need to show you by doing it........feel free to pm if you need further advice...im a vet.

here is a tip...palpate the voice box....gently with your hand and fingers..not just your fingers....if you dog retches/coughs it is more likely to be kennel cough. if it does not react to this then it is unlikely to be kennel cough.
