CNC, is it a good fit for ex forces guys

Hi guys ,reasonably new to this forum

left The Royal Navy a year and a half ago and currently half way through an International Relations degree . considering the CNC as a possible career path from 2016 (if they recruit again) given their remit and global role such as the maritime escort section, which particularly interests me

if there are any serving members of the CNC out there i would be grateful for your opinion on the service and i would also welcome any info from home office personnel who have worked with or understand the CNC's role

Looks like you would have to stag on for two years and in some remote locations before you get your shot at a specialist role and then more stagging on when you have your specialist role, think you would have to be a bit special to want to do that.
Been there done that but not with CNC.
 
It is two years before you can specialise, then bear in mind that there are a lot of people in there that will also want the specialist roles and there aren't that many to go around. In the meantime, you're sitting in a patrol car, standing in a Sanger, or patrolling in a car, you may also do foot patrols around the gates area and chat to the less bored civilian security. Realistically the height of excitement is going to be some of the tree huggers having a protest outside and praying they'll try to get in so you actually have something to do. You will also have to stag on in the "controlled" areas, ie. those areas next to the nasty stuff where you will have some risk of contamination. You will occasionally get to check out locals and tourists that have parked too near the site. Once in a blue moon you might actually get to deal with someone doing a recce. I'm not sure if all sites are the same but at Sellafield, searches on entry, checking passes etc. is all done by civilian security staff (although it used to be CNC).

I'm not CNC, but I have spoken to some of them as I was considering it, generally if you like being bored witless and carrying around about 3 stone of kit, then the job is for you.
 
I suspect as former RN and post your probation etc you may fit in well to the 'Neptune' Projects if they are still running.

and yes i did get that impression about stagging on from the website and pictures etc, gonna meet them at a careers fair in a few weeks so will see what they have to say for themselves, but appreciate the honesty

what about the MOD Plod, are they worth a look or is that just as limited in your view?
 
I personally think MoD Plod is a far better option, they have the largest force cover area of all the UK Police forces, it's not all stagging on either and the chance to specialise to a greater degree than CNC
 
thanks for that, just had a good look at MOD police, and there seems more scope to achieve things. CNC still attracts me but now really need to weigh each one up for 2016

What is the career fair you're talking about, is this in England?
I've applied for CNC, but am looking for MDP options as well, although I am in Scotland and not looking to relocate down South.

MDP are desperate for officers at Vulcan
 
we have ex-submariners at my unit. i'm cnc for 9 years,worked at 6 units and involved in recruit training.yes it can be boring but no more so than cp work but i've never took home less than 40k for working in the uk and before this did security/infantry (hm forces) for a long time.your always doing training away anyway so your not really doing that many shifts.
 
It was my hope that the period on duty would be well punctuated with training and development activities. whats your take on the maritime escort role as its the one which really grabs me as an ex matloe. I know the CNC finished a big recruitment campaign in may 2014 however not too sure if there will be one when i want to join in 2016-17 after i graduate.

I don't think you can compare CP work to CNC.

Work load or pay.
 
Depends where your doing it,i know many who are struggling for work after leaving the forces and would jump at the chance of a regular 40k plus pension based uk side
 
Why Mod Plod or CNC just join the regular force in your area, you won't do any staging on and the work is varied and very interesting. You can specialise within two years after probation in a lot of roles, not just ARV as everyone seems to want but Monted Traffic Air Ops or surveillance just to name a few.
