Driver training course.

Hi All

Ok I wanted to ask is anybody aware of any driver training courses that offer more than one style of car you learn to drive on. Most of the courses I am aware of seem to offer training on just one while on their respective courses. My thinking is no doubt a bmw 7 series would probably handle differently from a Mercedes s class and an Audi a8 etc. Thinking ahead and looking towards when we all apply for future positions if that be a security driver/close protection role it would be good to say at the said interview that you are trained to drive on all three styles of car as opposed to just one. Maybe there is a course like this I am just not aware of it look forward to hearing if it exists. Thanks in advance for any replies steering me in the right direction.

Driving is a perishable skill, like medical or shooting and as you won't be driving at the limit every day, what you learn on a course you describe, recognising the difference between an Audi with Quattro 4 wheel drive against a RWD BMW or a Top-heavy Range Rover, will soon be forgotten.

You are not learning to race a car and how it handles at the limit, you are learning 'roadcraft', anticipation, vehicle positioning and reaction-to-attack drills - what you learn in a Mondeo will work with an A8L etc

Once you know the above, hire a few posh vehicles so you can learn where all the buttons are, how wide it is, how stupid auto-closing doors work and so on.

All that will cover you for 99% of your time with the Principal - for the remaining 1%, a lot comes down to luck and natural ability and maybe something cool from your course - you don't think, you react, as no plan ever survives contact as they say.

Mr Blonde

thanks for your informative reply I had suspected that what I was looking for i.e. a quality training provider that trained on more than one car on their course was slim but worth asking if it existed.

I have a couple of training providers in mind for a course and have previously seen the type of car control you mention with some south wales police instructors on a course that CRG ran.

Again thanks for your reply and the information much appreciated.

Any driver training you undertake, you will be restricted to driving within the law of the road. Use the manual road craft and one piece of advice I would give. Advance driving is more about observations that anything else. Any fool can drive a car at speed. Find somebody who is a (ex) advance police instructor. I am sure there will be a few out there working for reputable companies.

Hi Jimmy194

thanks for your reply I have a couple of companies in mind for training and the correct use of road craft which you mention I already have a copy. My aim was to find if possible a specialist company that trained on more than just one type of car which at this time seems not to be available. The company at the top of my list at this time has a police trained advanced instructor at the helm. Again thanks for your reply and information.
