[Mods - if this is in the wrong forum, please move it, thanks]
For information - anyone who has military service after 1987 is eligible to claim for hearing loss damage inflicted during training due to insuffcient hearing protection.
Please check if this is being conducted by a solicitor in your local area (in the UK). SSAFA, the Legion or word of mouth may provide details.
The main criteria is establishing that damage was caused in training by exposure to gunfire and / or helicopter operations. Exposure to bomb blasts and terrorist action are not considered contributary.
Following an initial consultation with a solicitor, proof that damage is of a credible level is established by a hearing test conducted by a private consultant. On the basis of his report the MoD may contest, but it is unlikely as in most cases they will settle.
People I know who went through this process paid £250 up front (to the hearing specialist) and it took about four-six months to complete. Sums vary from £1000 to £5000 depending on service and circumstances, i.e. if a lot of time was spent in training environments the sum may be higher than for average training exposure.
It's worth enquiring to see if you can take advantage of this.
BTW the hearing test results are confidential and are not divulged to anyone outside of the claim process, i.e. your employer.
Not sure if it is true but I was told that 'Boots DMS' may be the next claim issue.
Best of luck.
