Hi all
I am after fitting an in car CCTV system to a car(!!)

It must:
Not be covert but be unobtrusive
Have Front and Rear Fixed Cameras - facing out!
Be able to read a number plate out to 30m
Location/speed recorded via GPS
Recorder in Boot
Monitor on dash
Record on Loop
Powered by car
Playback via monitor and download to PC/MAC via SD card or the like

Might be an unobtainable wish list but any advice on systems you have used or are using would be greatly received.

It's obtainable, but not cheap. Try TimeSpace Technology, Portable Covert Surveillance Systems | Mobile CCTV | Digital Video Recorders | DVR | Timespace Technology

Will take care of everything but the cameras.

This, or any similar system, will run 4 cameras, although they'll happily support 2, giving you a longer record time.

Normal 'bullet' cameras will fit the requirement, except the registration plate at 30m, that'll require a bit of modification. They're relatively 'discreet', as opposed to covert. Larger camera / lens combinations with better low light performance aren't a problem, but they're certainly going to be more obtrusive in the vehicle.

The one bit you haven't mentioned, are the light levels the system is to be used under. For daylight, dusk, under streetlights etc, these cameras will be fine.

All this can be run from the vehicle battery, but depending on the application, I'd suggest a supplementary battery, securely mounted, and maybe a beefed up alternator and external charger.

Most 'commercial' surveillance DVR's will run from 12vdc, and do part of what you want, and if you want to do it 'cheaper', there are flashcard recorders, 4 camera inputs, but if you're doing a proper job....

...then gimme a call :)

we do a system with all of the above and you can also view cameras / zoom cameras and playback remote away from car.

bullet cameras with varifocal lens will pick plates 30m - 50m the good thing about the avers is if you have 1 or 4 cars / vans with the system fitted you can watch all cameras via internet on one screen at a remote location

Tom,

What is information re the following...?

1. Storage device
2. Mac compatible
3. Night capability
4. HD

I have both front and rear facing HD cameras in the B/U vehicle. Storage is by way of a 32GB micro SD card which provides 8 hrs continuous footage at HD with audio and GPS Google Earth overlay.

The recording begins as soon as the vehicle is remotely unlocked and ends 10 mins after the vehicle is locked.

Can your system compare well?

Thanks,

Rich H

Camera options for low light / night capability are pretty few, assuming their mounted in the vehicle, behind glass.

Watec, Pacific Corp, and a couple of 'anonymous' board options. They're better than most of the regular commercial options, just a little harder to find. :)

Hi rich. most of these systems are much the same as each other. but micro SD is limited like you say to hours the avers can use 2.5 or 3.5 1tb hard drives so if you have good power you can look at 7 to 12 days. can be alot longer if you use smart recording i.e say you are watching a front door from down the street you mask off the door on recorder and it will only record what is happening at the door and around the area once the mask has detected movment.

same as your the system can be set to either start from ignition and switch off either 10-20-30 upto 1 hour (or set to never stop) and these also have gps google overlay.

Hi tomengineer,
I'm also interested in this system, but more specifically the EB 1304 MOB. Do you have a shop/office where it's possible to view/hear the gear running !! I'm interested in the noise levels because it's going to be overt monitoring. I see your sig states Chester. I'm also Cheshire area.

....and there's more..........

Or indeed if anyone else has any suggestions for a mobile DVR. Must be 4ch (with 1 audio), backup output available (ie usb), hopefully D1, will be using 500Gb HD, (unless advised otherwise). For use in the lovely UK climate. Max use probably 12 hrs static at a time.

Cheers

Just spoken to who I believe may be my nearest supplier, (MAS at Birkenhead) and they tell me that Avermedia no longer make the EB1304 (net) as they don't want to compete at the lower end of the market !! This may be the case, or just sales talk..........!!

They don't know of any other mobile DVR that don't use cards for data storage. Anyone on here know better?
Help !

Don't know about MAS, but have a word with Tomtheengineer, see if he can lay his hands on one.

There are other DVR's that use card storage, but the Aver is prob best bet, even if it has been made obsolete !

Depending on the vehicle / application, I'd be happy with using any of the mainstream DVR's that use a hard drive, just make sure they'll operate on 12vdc.

Have pm'd him, thanks.

When you say "any of the mainstream DVR's", are you referring to just "mobile" ones, or ones designed to sit in a nice warm building/house, (or anything but a rattly vehicle)....lol

Assuming you're 'averagely gentle' with it, and don't go in for rallying, should be fine !

Specialist 'mobile' DVR's & PC's should have slightly different transport mechanisms & write arms, giving a bigger gap between the disc and arm, to allow for vibration, lumps & bumps, etc.

If you take care mounting it, on a cushioned plate etc, it'll do. ...and if / when, you do eventually wreck it, they're cheap enough to buy another one. :)

(NB: The professional, mobile DVR is the Ovation Afterburner, doesn't have any features to speak of, and will skin you over £2k. )

It's pretty much standard kit for plod sv vehicles.

AfterBurner-2 time-lapse DVD video recorder with video quad and Ethernet interface for police video surveillance.

Those were pretty much my thoughts on the subject too, but I wasn't sure they were correct. If nowt turns up from any other source, as you say, they are pretty cheap, which makes them expendable (to a certain degree), and if I can mount (suspend) them adequately, 95% of the time, they're going to be static. The only other thing to watch is temp and condensation, etc.
Cheers for that

Top and bottom, Ally, ply or hardboard, mdf, modelling board etc., either side of some squidgy foam.

This stuffs not normally too fussy as to whether it's mounted horizontaly or vertically. If it's a covert install, somewhere in the boot, behind one of the side panels or spare wheelwell. If it's not critical, then a nice complete homebuilt bracket, containing supplementary battery, power distribution board, etc, mounted and secured to the boot floor.

You do not want this lot smacking you on back of head when you do emergency stop.

If the gear's operating, it should be generating enough warmth for temp / condensation not to be a problem. If you're starting from 'cold', ideally keep the car in garage overnight, or shove a 'handwarmer' in the boot.
