Mumbai terror attack

thanks for posting this.
I've been looking carefully at the details from the Westgate Mall attack in Kenya. There are definitely some strong similarities between Mumbai and Westgate ... in the way that the terrorists are attacking "soft targets" like malls, hotels and crowded public places. It's very clear that the terrorist community - meaning their high-level planners - are extracting lessons from each of these attacks and using them to improve their methods going forwards.

a few thoughts:

1. The Mumbai attack, with approach by the ocean, was a particularly clever scheme. The switch to the Indian boat while afloat was a cunning way to do the final approach into the port at Mumbai. I am actually surprised that terrorists have not used this approach method more often since the Mumbai incident. It is extremely difficult to stop. We are bound to see it again somewhere in the world.

2. It continues to surprise me that the high-level trainers who prepare these terrorists can take raw recruits and get them up-to-speed in just 4 months of training. Considering the sophistication of the attack plans, you would think that raw recruits would screw things up. But not only do they carry out the attacks as-planned, they also maintain a high level of awareness and calm thoughout their operation. There is something going on with the terrorist training methods that western agencies do not fully understand.

3. A common feature of both Mumbai and Westgate was that the terrorist teams maintained continuous contact (radio or cell phone) with high-level controllers. This increased the lethality of the attacks because the controllers could adjust the strategy as they saw things play out.

4. In both Mumbai and Westgate the terrorists achieved such a high level of surprise and aggression that they completely dominated the local police response. In effect, the terrorists dominated the OODA loop of the defenders. This was no accident, and was clearly a part of the original planning.

5. In both incidents the terrorists stretched the incidents out over several days, in spite of massive reinforcements by police and military at the critical incident zones. This part of the terrorist operations is not well understood by western analysts - the ability of the terrorists to hold out. Something is going on in their training.

6. These incidents could be staged again almost anywhere in the world - incl. Europe, UK and USA - with a similar level of devastation. It is VERY hard to protect soft targets like malls and hotels. Body counts could be just as high.

Just my thoughts.
