Phoenix CP has devised a comprehensive four-week training package to realistically prepare men and women for a career in the Close Protection industry. This course, conducted at Phoenix’s modern facility near Hereford, is designed to meet operational requirements within the commercial security market and give you the qualifications and confidence to seek employment secure in the knowledge that you can do the job. The Phoenix CP course effectively integrates theoretical and practical aspects of the syllabus into a consistent package which meets the realistic demands of the commercial security sector and moves you from entry-level basics to a high standard in CP procedures, unarmed defence, CP driving skills, first aid and trauma management.

These are all competencies considered essential by potential employers.
The course is taught by operationally experienced and professionally qualified instructors, including former Special Forces soldiers and other specialists with extensive military, police and commercial experience.

Passing the Phoenix CP course gives you a SIA-accredited certificate in Close Protection, as well as a City & Guilds Level 3 certificate. The course syllabus includes:

F I R E A R M S C O U R S E

The Phoenix CP Firearms Course is a 5 day, practical course designed for those who are likely to
deploy on Close Protection or protective security assignments overseas, where the carriage of
firearms may be necessary and is legally permitted.

An armed Close Protection Officer involved with VIP or asset protection may have to respond with
controlled lethal force, as a last resort. This calls for decisive and clear thinking combined with speed
and accuracy, while under extreme pressure.

Phoenix CP believes that the ability to meet these demands requires training which involves intensive practical instruction using the weapons you are likely to encounter on operations, generous amounts of live ammunition and a variety of testing scenarios:

3 days of pistol training, using the Glock 17 pistol;
2 days of assault rifle training, using the SIG 550 series 5.56 rifle;
A minimum of 250 rounds fired every day.

Phoenix CP training is based on practical techniques developed through years of operational
experience and using the proven techniques of the American Small Arms Academy system. Tuition is
provided by Phoenix CP’s firearms instructors who have a wealth of Special Forces and operational
experience.

Due to the UK handgun ban and because the necessary skill level cannot be taught through artificial
means, Phoenix CP conducts its firearms course at an excellent range complex near Geneva in
Switzerland.

Phoenix CP’s mission is to provide the best quality training possible for service leavers and for those
already operating within the private security industry. Its success is proved by the fact that around half of all SIA-licensed CP operators have been trained by Phoenix CP.
The detailed explanation, skilful demonstration and expert coaching, conducted in a relaxed but safety conscious environment, combines to develop the skills and competencies of students to a high standard. This is also a qualifying course after which successful students will receive a Handgun Proficiency Certificate.

I was told prior to the date of your thread that Pheonix have ceased CP training, and they have definitly finished the firearms training package with the associated company. There is also a rumour they are being investigated for malpractice in exam conditions, just a rumour don't know if its true.
 
That was the same rumour I have heard while I was training in the UK this year and was the reason for the "relocation" story. The rumour I heard went further and also included their "weakest link" policy during the course as well. I am sure there may have been a few that felt that it was an injustice to be thrown off the course prior to an exam. After all even if you are not going to pass, you have paid for the entire course and should therefore complete it as some people shine at the last minute.

They were posting on British Army Rumour Service for a while and had noticed some of my posts regarding CPO training companies but it went suddenly quiet around the time the rumours started circulating. I did post on their thread asking for their point of view on the situation and to date that has not been no response.

If anyone from Phoenix that uses this forum it would be nice if they can at least state what the current situation is regarding their courses.
 
I have had a number of students this year who were "voted out of the big brother house" I couldn't believe what they were telling me. They were good enough people to pass. At the end of the day its a training coursewhich they have paid for. Its a very odd system and I could not be party to it.

Part of a UK aimed CP course in my opinion, is to give you a transistional bridge from the military if thats where you have come to civilian life. To assist you with your communication skills of how you interact with people from all walks of life but especially those in the corporate world, protocol is a major part of that learning process. You may have to work with someone you don't nessassarly like, but you won't be able to vote him off the job especially if he is a favorite of the principle/client so you will have to get on with them.

As I say a very odd system they had, I personally have not heard of a government or commercial CP training unit using it.
 
Phoenix used to be the main name in UK CP provision and rightly so. However they stopped courses early last year and Lugwardine Hall has been sold, so I think the post is incorrect, although Armour are going to run CP in the US, and there is a lot of evidence that they were shovelling massive groups through the sia licencing and operating a bit of an old boy network.

If Baghdad Bandit has been out in the Pit for the last four years, things have moved on mate, it's a lot tougher and far more regulated, centers are being closed all the time for malpractice, and quite right too.

As for Govt agencies using thier facilities, why would they do that? They have the killing house at Hereford, Longmoor and it's facilities, Tin City in Lydd and the Met have their Public Order cetre in Hounslow!!

Hi, I had a mate who did the course in 2005 and he told me it was ok, most guys there told him he should have done the ronin course.. But saying that my mate told me the instructors seemed to be ok.
 
I understand the takeover by Armour did not go as smoothly as hoped by the various parties, leading to certain, er, problems... I did here all assets, including the Hall, had been sold but that wasn't from an overly reliable source..

Yes, they had some strange ideas... Problems with adapting to modern teaching techniques I think more than anything else (I am a qualified instructor) and yes there was a large number pushed through just to fill Armours positions in places sandy...

to be fair to your mate, it probably was ok three years ago, and if you pay £3k for a course, no-one is going to slag it off of as you'd look ridiculous.

On saying that I did the IBA course to get my ticket and it was pants! So I am ridiculous, nothing new there then!

Ronin I think still have the best course, but people can achieve the same aim (SIA licence), pay half the price and not have to leave the UK.

My opinion, for what its worth, Try Ronin for HE and Greymans for regular CP...
 
JR, how long have you been out the Met? Hounslow is all houses now. The new MPSTC is now at Gravesend since 2001, its an excellent facility and is quoted as the best public order and specialist firearms training centreoutside the US, inclusive of planes, trains, and 2 towns but just to name a few of its assets. Finger...pulse come on
 
I was in contact with Phoenix this summer just gone, looking into doing my CP course with them. They e-mailed saying I needed to go on for interviews/open day and said I was on the mailing list, however have heard nothing since...... Booked with Delta01 in South africa. Has anyone been on this course?
 
Pheonix are not doing cp courses, all their instructors have moved on. Remember what I have been saying, its not the company that makes a good course its the instructors, and instructors do move about.
 
Nick f*** off you clever arse! Whilst you were filling your face in AB canteen mate, I was on the frontline in Bristol doing real police work without a glock!!! Although am obliged for the update!!

but dont you think the price is abit to high now 3200 quid for 3 weeks i paid that and got 4 weeks with them ????????So what has changed ?
 
Please do not take this as sarcasm or bitching, I have a genuine question. Will this lead to anyone seeking employment with Armor Group having to do a course with Phoenix first, regardless of their qualifications, in a similar vein to what Control Risks are doing?
 
Having set up Phoenix in 2000 and being its MD until 1 Jun 04, I feel obliged to make the point that the main aim of the Phoenix CP training course (we also had ops) was to introduce higher professional standards within the private sector. The circuit had always been governed by reputation and recommendation yet the civy training market was dominated by walter mittys etc that seduced wannabes and the ill-informed to part with their hard earned cash. Result was a saturation of the workplace with inadequately trained and unsuitable human beings that were limited in employability.

During my time, we did introduce the 'slate a mate', whereby each student completed a form (anomously) as to who they would work with or not. This was used to advise the individual on his 'teamwork shortcomings' and was never intended to be justification in failing someone. I will not comment on what happened after I left!
 
Just playing devils advocate here please don't take this as any kind of insult...... 'slate a mate' is that not a tad derogatory considering these guys where all trainees in the field no matter who they were and how much military experience they had? They all paid to do a FULL course and from what i heard through the old grapevine some didn't get it. How the hell can a trainee tell you with any degree of how can i say this ok say integrity and actusal experience who they'd work with or not!

I have trained people in Cp and yes some do instantly stand out as just basically NOT fit for purpose but i certainly would never actually go ahead and ask other trainees to tell me who they would work with or not. It isn't the military and even then you don't get a choice!

I just never quite understood that whole concept of the course was all and it was quite big news at the time, obviously i can see that you have left since then, was just a question

Nice to meet you.

One of the problems often encountered is team harmony, especially important when a team (whatever the size) is living with their Principal and family. It is hard enough getting a contract but keeping it can be even harder. Communication and interpersonal skills are essential in CP work, as most of the time it is about day to day mundane work, long hours, dealing with people, frustration etc etc.... Dealing with incidents is generally straight forward, its a lack of teamwork and certain individual characteristics that can let you down. When on a course 24/7 over a month period, the best judge are your peers (unless instructors are living with you).
