Question regarding Iraqi Tax and new airport rules

Hi guys, just a couple of questions I thought id throw out there to the guys on the curcuit in Iraq.

The word on the street is that the company Im working for is the only one that require their employees to pay Iraqi tax which is currently 5-10% looking at possibly 15% next year, whereas guys in other companies get theirs paid by their companies. I dont know if it infinges on any forum rules about naming companies so il say mine as starts with A@@@ and ends with S.

Also weve now been told that no PMC vehicles are alowed in Basra ariport and we have to pay between $5 - $50 PER MAN for a taxi (So if your thinking of taxi sharing its not gonna make a difference) from the gate to the terminal building (approx 1mile) until further notice. Obviously this is a massive scam for the IP as they are the ones running the taxi's.

Thanks all

the maggots I am with are paying the LN's tax all except $ 3-5 as of this month. I expect the S... to hit the fan when payday comes around. If you wanna know what company this is look at my thread in serious debates - help in Iraq. You should work out who these maggots are. As far as the new airport taxi services are concerned , thanks for the heads up as I will be leaving soon as I have quit. I am on one of the big oil sites outside Basrah so if I hear of any changes ot the airport "taxi" service I will let you know. take care that side.

This scam has been running in Baghdad for a while now. Not for expats though but the civvie LN's get hit with it. It's about 50 dollars each way for them. It's no surprise It's happening down in Basra now. Parasites.

My mate Jimmy from round the block told me for $5!

No it was from our company Ops officer, wev all (in my company) been sent the email and had the brief regarding this 2 days ago and what our procedures are now regarding new rules. Im simply wanting to know has anyone else been told something similar, I will find out soon enough if this is actually Gen up, but should be an eyebrow raiser for those leaving or arriving in country that this may be in full effect. Im out on leave on the in a week or so myself and will find out first hand.

Higlights from the email include:

All,
Please be aware that the situation on arrival and departure from Basra airport and the access to and from the COB has changed significantly in the last 24-48 hours.
The current state of affairs is this;
1.No PST from any company is allowed anywhere within the civilian airport perimeter.
2.All movement to and from the Alpha gate must be by airport bus or taxi.
3.The fee is somewhere between $5 and $50 per man, not per vehicle. There, needless to say, are an abundance of taxis waiting to be used!
4.The Delta gate is closed to traffic into the COB at 1600.
5.Foot traffic into the COB by the Ritz gate is banned.
How long this state of affairs will last no one knows. It is expected that some level of sanity will prevail in the not too distant future but this is only likely to temper the vehicle hire cost not the allowance of PST into and out of the airport.

See,first of all : i would never post any e-mail from company on open forum.

And second : did you maybe ever heard for a Permit issued by IP for BIA?

Fidelis2007,
He's correct so no need to ask any more questions nor question his source, and he's not mentioned the company in the email, infact there's a huge flap on trying to get guys on leave a heads up as there's NOT going to be a PSD team to meet them, so posting this email and others like it I applaud as it's passing on critical information.
Between the fcuking fiasco of immigration and now this, don't be surprised if a leading airline stop flying in and out of Basrah shortly.
Yeah it's a scam, but it's a fcuking dangerous situation to find yourself in now, only too easy to bundle expats into another vehicle between the Alpha gate and the terminal, and nobody would know a thing!!..the kidnap threat in Basrah has never decreased, this latest episode is a recipe for disaster and a security nightmare, and it's a lot further than a mile from Alpha gate, it's closer to 2-3 miles.

As for the tax situation, some companies gave their guys an increase and absorbed the 12-15% levy, others increased the daily rate and then reduced the levy, but yes it's happening , but at present it's not being controlled by the MOI, it's all down to the PSC's themselves, and if it doesn't start till next Jan, as in 2012, there's a lot of blokes going to be demanding that tax back !! Most companies are pre-empting the sudden demand by the MOI .

This is what is going on at Basra Airport at present :

2 days ago new Police Chief in charge for Basra Airport security took over the command and he brought some new rules. It's still allowed to enter the airport area but only a driver with clients,no weapons,no body armor. The same policy is when you go to pick up the client.Other vehicles must park outside the A gate. It's only a matter of time when something will happen there. And lets see for how long it will be like this.
Basra airport is hit with Katjushas on daily base and today early morning there were some raids around. And yes Argyll you're right, security threat in Basra is high.

Regarding taxes this situation is still very unclear.

Finally some answers to my question without a question. Cheers for theresponse guys, I do believe your correct Argyll, companies are protecting theirprofits, and hence we have now been told the amount is dependent on personalcircumstances, EG: Married, pay into private pension, pay voluntary NI.
Some of the blokes out on leave paid $20 for a taxi which is better thanthe previously mentioned quoted price per man Yes my company have heard of anAlpha gate pass and are in possession of one, however the check point are nowno longer allowing us through.

we where blocked at alpha gate ............only one with no weapons or vest just clients and one driver and they said sorry take taxi $15
WTF !!! and then we open targets out side ..... keep safe all

Heh,things changed today,AGAIN!!!

Now they don't allow ANYONE to enter A gate....Stay outside,if you wanna go in taxi only with $15 price!!!

This is a total bullshit!!!!!

Entry via Basrah is currently $82 with the requirement to provide a blood sample if staying longer than 10 days with or without a multi-entry visa... as for the current state of play with access to the airport. T.I.I !!!

This is mental, anything could kick off between Alpha and the terminal, the kidnap threat is higher than ever and we struggled to halt incursions of this area with 2 FP companys not so long ago!

Take care guys!
