Six Plead Guilty To English Defence League Rally Bomb Plot

Six West Midlands men have pleaded guilty to plotting to bomb the rally. The bombers failed in their attempt because they turned up to the rally after it had finished. All six of the men will be sentenced on 6 June after they were caught when their car was stopped and was found to have no insurance. The police had no intelligence on the attempted attack but one of the men was under investigation for a separate terrorist plan.

Omar Mohammed Khan, Mohammed Hasseen, Anzal Hussain, Mohammed Saud, Zohaib Ahmed, and Jewel Uddin were all captured by police as their car was stopped and they were found to have no insurance. Following investigation, it turns out that the men had been planning to explode a bomb at a rally by the English Defence League (EDL) in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The men had apparently only failed in their attempt because they had arrived only after the rally had finished.

The EDL is an anti-Islamist group that claim to use non-violent and peaceful forms of protest. Members of the local Muslim community had attempted to have the rally stopped but it went ahead on 30 June. It is estimated that there would have been around 750 supporters at the event and any explosion would have risked the life of many passers-by as well as Police in the area as well.

Five of the group of six travelled to the rally in two cars. One of the cars contained a homemade bomb that had been created using a modified framework. It contained more than 300 nails and nearly 100 ball bearings. The gang also carried an array of weapons including shotguns, knives, and parts of other explosive devices. The police ominously found a printed letter that referred to the Queen as a female devil. It was dated on the same day as the rally. The rally had broken up because the EDL did not have enough speakers to continue.

Police stopped one of the vehicles for not having insurance and the items were found days later when the car was searched. It was then discovered that the police did have details of one of the men, Jewel Uddin. He was considered a potential terrorist threat but was not under constant surveillance because he was not believed to be in the process or nearing the final stages of planning any terrorist attack. Zohaib Ahmed was on bail at the time of the attack for possession of Jihadist magazines and instructions on how to make a bomb.

The failed bombing attempt is the latest in a number of comings together by Islamists and the EDL. Sentencing of the six men will take place on 6 June and police have said that they were taking appropriate action against Uddin and Ahmed according to the perceived threat they posed at the time. There has been criticism, especially over Uddin and there have been comparisons with the West Yorkshire man police investigated in 2004 and went on to lead the 2005 suicide bombings.

Whilst the EDL are a group that leaves little to be desired for, know one should become victim to this sort of attack. A good job done by the British bobby on the street, well done!
