BEIRUT (AP) — Israeli warplanes attacked a shipment of Russian missiles inside a Syrian government stronghold, officials said Thursday, a development that threatened to add another volatile layer to regional tensions from the Syrian civil war.

The revelation came as the government of President Bashar Assad met a key deadline in an ambitious plan to eliminate Syria's entire chemical weapons stockpile by mid-2014 and avoid international military action.

The announcement by a global chemical weapons watchdog that the country has completed the destruction of equipment used to produce the deadly agents highlights Assad's willingness to cooperate, and puts more pressure on the divided and outgunned rebels to attend a planned peace conference........Read Full Story

looks like the strike was against SA-8 anti-aircraft missiles. but at two different sites, incl Damascas. the media is saying - and who knows if this is true - that the weapons were intended for Hezbollah. if true, it's plausible because Isarel has hit other arms convoys moving to Hezbollah. but there is no way of knowing the truth about the stike. hitting a target in Damascas is an inflammatory move - it would not be surprising if Syria and Hezbollah attacked Jewish targets in response somewhere.

cheers,
KL

This is the 5th time that such attacks have been attributed to Israel (this year); regardless, Hezbollah has been trying to hist Jewish and Israeli targets since the Mughniyah assassination; they don't need an excuse.

Stopping Hezbollah from getting sophisticated weaponry is not inflammatory, it's necessary - whoever is responsible.

In a world where most of the West's leaders are either closet muslims or public school pansies, Israel is the only country with balls to say it how it is and follow up on the rhetoric.

Nice declaration of war for the 5th time from our Zionist "masters".
Can you imagine if it was vice-versa??
The Israeli war-mongerers would then get the very expensive, internationally supported conflict they've been looking for and we'd all be even more fcuked on this failing, war-ravaged planet of ours.
I'm not a big fan of Muslim ME countries but Zionist Israel just takes the piss every time.

i don't have a problem with what you're saying. just noting that an attack which goes close to Damascas is likely to trigger some sort of retaliation from the Syrians. it could well escalate the overt tension between Israel and Syria.

It happens more often that we all here about. Syria is in no position to launch a front with Israel; they have their hands full with their internal strife.

I still sleep well at night. :)

If you take a look behind the curtain you will discover a whole new world where the Zionists run almost every national government and this mandate is always used to further Israel's agenda.
It's not the Jews (I am one), it's the Zionists- there is a big difference.
You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist- that's another deception.

Religion- be it Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism or Islam is just the vessel used by the powerful to motivate the lessers to perform like prancing horses and they're the ones that pay in blood while the powerful get even richer as a result.
Israel is very lucky that it has the US in it's back pocket or they would never have made it this far and would have gone under after Yon Kippur in '73 and definitely after the Six-Day war.
It takes particular character to throw one group of people off their land and claim it as their own then harp on about them hitting back. It's called blow-back and just as with their big bro (US) it's well deserved.

For someone who says he's a Jew, don't you think that sounds just a tad anti-semitic?

If you want to blame anyone, blame the Brits. Israel exists because Britain promoted the idea of a national home for the Jewish People, in the hope that Britain would implement it and exercise political control over Palestine, effectively "freeze out France (and anyone else) from any post–war (WWI) presence in Palestine. Prime Minister David Lloyd George supported the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine because "it would help secure post-war British control of Palestine, which was strategically important as a buffer to Egypt and the Suez Canal and as a strategic terminus for the flow of Iraqi oil via Jordan. Conflict in the Middle East is about oil, from it's discovery right up until today. The Brits underestimated the Jewish settlers' will and ability to fight and lost control. It is what it is.

The correct term is "self-hater" not "anti-Semitic".
The actual person to blame for Israel, or rather the high-profile figure that pushed it all along was Lord Balfour who signed the Declaration in 1917 in return for the US joining WW1.
Here's a link for you. You will notice that what was agreed on then has been completely forgotten now....

Jew or not, he's a fool. He's not a Jew anyway, any Jew would know it's Yom Kippur and not Yon Kippur.

There have been some comments about how Israel has the U.S. "in it's back pocket". Not with this president. Obummer is openly pro muslim and anti Israel.

It is Israel that bows down to the US.

Yes, there is a very strong pro-Israel lobby in the US, no doubt, but at the end of the day, the US does what is good for the US and that is how it should be (from the US point of view).

In fact, had the US not exerted such extreme pressure on Israel, both the Iranian and Syrian threats would be no more and the 2nd Gulf War would never have been.

I would also like to add that too often, Israel does stupid, stupid things but there are few things worse or more damaging than self-haters.

Good for Israel, hit them again, drop one for me and while your at it drop another one on your way out. Not like Syria can do anything about it, and even if Assad wanted to do something about it by the time they make it out of planning they will have lost total control of what they currently have and then not even be able to get up off the ground. They have no abilities to move forward with any response to Israeli Military Action other than making a statement to the press.
