    Celox or QuickClot?

Don't worry, RMI, I'm well versed in appraising the original evidence for myself and did not get the video from the website. I also get copies of the original articles and assess those in light of the breadth of evidence in the subject. However, the video is there for those who want to see how...

    Celox or QuickClot?

It's in a syringe-like injectorwith a wide end. I've seen the company videos on a pig arterial wound and in those, it did what it was supposed to. I think they are available to view on the Celox website. I've never used it in anger, though, so can't comment on that.

    Lifesaver CPR training - free

The Resuscitation Council (UK) has combined forces with award-winning production company UNIT9 to develop LIFESAVER an interactive film to teach CPR. It's free to use so please share it with your colleagues, friends and family. You can see a 3-minute video introduction to LIFESAVER here...

Should torniquets be taught in first aid?

Still, at least it's ahead of the PHTLS "update" - that might take another 8 years ;-)

    Back from the dead

Good read, but more a non-technical update on what's already happening. There has been routine cooling post cardiac arrest since the 2010 guidelines, and many centres had been at least trialling it before then. In my experience, I've not seen a change in "did Uncle Bob get given a chance" type...

    Abdominal checks on pregnant women

Hi Evacpack Do you mean using a long spinal board? If you need to do that, strap the patient to the board and tilt the board with her on it. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick? The bleeding that tends to be most common is the mother bleeding from somewhere else - take care of the...

    ABC Mnuemonic

The decision to drop the pulse check from lay person (non-healthcare professional) CPR wasn't because people were thought to be stupid, but because they found out that even trained healthcare professionals can find it difficult to decide if a carotid pulse is present when they are stressed and...

    Abdominal checks on pregnant women

Hi Rich There's no risk to a baby from normal clinical examination, and feeling around the abdomen and assessing the size of the uterus is part of normal antenatal care. A pregnant womb feels like a firm mound rising out of the pelvis, centrally located in the abdomem, similar to very full...

    Packing penetrating thoracic injuries

I think you're right that use in trauma is off-label at present in the UK. It's a shame that you'll have to wait so long in the US - many other drugs in both UK/Europe and the USA have been given approval on much more flimsy data, or even removed a few years later as the risks become evident...

    Remote Medikit, this any good?

Completely agree, Phecta, you've always got to assume that any airway can be dislodged or displaced at any moment, especially with movement. I always tie them, as I always tie a tube - it won't prevent all dislodegements, but it does help, especially if the teeth are missing.

    Packing penetrating thoracic injuries

In the UK, tranexamic acid is now routinely used for all trauma patients who are bleeding, and is usually given even as the "massive haemorrhage" protocol is being activated, if not already given pre-hospital, and so goes in before any blood or blood products get started. It should be in most...

Paramedic: moving to Oz. Anyone done it? Advice and pointers?

I've don't have the experience that you're looking for, but do know that Careflight (QLD, NSW and Northern Territory) recruit paramedics, and so does a company called Anodyne Services Australia. Careflight do roadside response and critical care retrievals, and ASA do international repatriations...

    Packing penetrating thoracic injuries

Cheers, MM for the clarifying post. I meant "as soon as possible" in relation to the time of injury, not "as fast as you can" but can see how it might have been misinterpreted!

    ILS Course Belfast

Peecee, it's a Resuscitation Council course which has been running for 8-10 years and is aimed at people who would not do a full ALS course (aimed at team leaders). It's aimed at recognition of the peri-arrest patient, CPR with airway support (including LMA) and defibrillation i.e. management of...

    Unconcious drunks

Depending on your registration, you may have a duty to intervene if you see someone at risk, provided you aren't incapable yourself, and could face a professional hearing for not doing so. "Official" advice/actions of the "authority" aren't always correct - I had to call an emergency...
