Six police officers and a civilian were killed in a shootout in Mexico's most violent city, Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the United States, officials said.
Two police vehicles came under fire shortly after midday on Friday as officers carried out a routine vehicle check in the notorious border city across from El Paso, Texas, said Enrique Torres, a spokesman for Chihuahua state security operations.
"Four federal agents and one municipal officer died at the scene of the attack, and another municipal officer died in hospital," Torres said.
Several other injured officers were being treated in hospital under heavy police protection, he added.
Security forces detained six youths after launching an intense search operation in the city, which registered more than 2,660 murders last year.
Arizona's two Republican senators on Monday proposed sending 3,000 more US National Guard soldiers to the border as drug-related violence has intensified across northern Mexico in recent weeks.
More than 22,700 people have died in suspected drug attacks since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a military crackdown on organized crime after taking office in late 2006.
