Hello guys
I have a question, I did do some research but Im unclear of the requirements. Im interested in becoming a SSO. I do intend going with the c&g Im also aware that I will need firearms training (bear in mind I have no previous experience).
My first question is it true that MARSEC is only really for ex-military or a person like me can go for that line of work ?
Any help would be appreciated.

P.S I know the pay is not so good anymore and it is difficult to actually find a job, im doing this so that after a few years I can go and work in Halifax NS Canada. Its in the maritime so there is one or two opportunities there.

use the search bar to the top right hand side of the forum, you will see that there is FAR more to the role than simply the SSO course. Some of which is required, some if which is fallacy that some training providers are trying to put forward as their version of the truth.
in short, there is a LOT of money to be spent before you can place your size 9s on the bridge of any commercial vessel.
Is it only for ex-mil? No.
Realistically, are you likely to get a shot if you are NOT ex military? No. You are not.

Save your pennies, think carefully about what interests you about the role, and look for an alternative path to the same outcome, because as it stands, from what you say, it is likely to be a waste of money.

Honestly STCW95 basic training is the First and mandatory step to get your feet within a yacht or whatever on the sea......

Suggest you do your homework first.

For work as a Ships Security Officer as per the IMO definition you need to be a qualified Officer in the Merchant Navy.

As regards the SSO qualification for security work on board then your option is in the Cruise industry, former Royal Navy members being preferred. For private yachts then who you know tends to be the deciding factor.

For the Armed/Unarmed area of ships security team then you are looking at the MSO (Maritime Security Officer) course and all its add-ons.

Your money, do not be led astray by false promises!
