ALS Certificate

Ladies and Gents,

Can any of you HCPC registered Paramedics answer a question for me please?

I'm currently in discussion with G4S about a Tier 2 Medic position and they want to see all my certificates but I do not have a separate ALS one as it is all part of being a Para in the UK. I'm sure I'm not the first person for this to happen to so how have you all dealt with it previously?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

J

Yep, know what you mean, and it's shite I know.

The reason is anchored in several places.

1. Recruiters are generally speaking, cnuts, that have little or know idea about scope of practice.
2. The ALS 'qual' held by trust paras, is unlikely to be RCUK ALS, and is in fact an abridged version appropriate to the scope of practice whilst working for a trust. To get around this, I attend RCUK ALS training at least once a year, and often more.
3. It's worth considering that recruiters have to recruit globally. That's because of the nature of the available work. A para in the UK is massively different to a para in say France, Italy, Greece, the US, Aus.......So, what is a paramedic? Who knows as there's no international common standard, and it goes from Aus MICA and UK types, to unkept goat herders that just happen to drive a white van with ambulance on the side of it. That presents a problem for recruiter, and the way they get around that, is to demand that ALL paras undertake training such as RCUK ALS or their other nation equivalent.
4. In case you didn't pick up on it, it's worth saying twice - recruiters are cnuts.

As for G4S, well, good luck with that......
