an armed society is a polite society

Just out of interest; if everybody "thinks" that everybody is armed in your AOR what level of gun-crime do you have?
Armed robberies, street robberies, home invasions etc.
I see that the "gun-free" places like Chicago have big problems with gun-crime as normal people can't carry or own weapons and the crims know this hence they know they the threat level, for them, is low.

I hope you and your mrs have a nice, fuzzy feeling knowing that if you need to use it you can.
Through my research on this I've just learned that Chicago has now reintroduced a concealed-carry for the public and guess what???... Crime is starting to drop and will no doubt continue to come down as the crims don't want a 2 way range on their ass.
Chicago's Murder Rate Plummets With Concealed Carry Law | RedState

The general consensus in Europe is that the public shouldn't be armed, although it doesn't have the same situation with gun crime (criminals do not automatically go on sprees if they think people are unarmed). I guess they're more polite, or something. Most European countries don't prevent gun ownership though, even if under the guise of "sport".

In the US this paradigm definitely seems to work though, arm people, crime drops. When's the last time you saw a school mass shooting in a really bad South LA gangland area?

Here in Italy you can get a carry permit, but the justification is difficult. Unless you own a jewellery store it's hard to get in most places. I don't have one, but if I feel I'm going into a higher risk area, I might just ignore that I'm breaking the law. Protection of myself and family and friends supersedes the law in my book. Besides half the cops in Italy would look the other way if it came down to a truly justified defensive shoot.

But hey, my Glock 34 is a "sporting" weapon, and my ARs are hunting rifles (no limit on ownership), so it's all good. I've walked past cops with both in Milan with my plate carrier and they've never stopped me.

In 'polite' society, no problem with anybody carrying arms of one sort or another.

Assuming everyone is a reasonably intelligent, sane, rational adult with an IQ in double digits.

....that knocks out at least 75% of the people i come across every day.

In 25 years we have had one 'murder' that was ruled self defence and a bread knife was used.
Like almost everywhere, poor people rob the homes of other poor people. I live in an old town, that has a railroad track through the middle of town going east to west. It has a classic 'right' and 'wrong' side of the tracks population. 90% of crime happens on one side, and 10% on the other. Drugs are sold on one side, but not on the other. Guess which side has no real problems, and don't lock their doors when they go shopping?
A few years ago, we bought a house on the corner of a cross roads, and at the 'closing' the owner got up to leave. I asked "Are you going to give my wife the keys?" she smiled and said; "I haven't had keys to the house in NINE years!" and walked out.
Way back when the "G8" Summit was in Georgia, almost every State sent Agents and Police to GA to help the protective detail.
I was one of them. On day three, at a 'debrief' a New Jersey State Trooper said with almost disbelief "I searched seven vehicles with guns in them!" A local Deputy said; "You only stopped seven vehicles?" "Shee-yit!"

Since moving here, in 1989 I have come across only one incident of "Road Rage" in all that time. On my last trip to the UK, six in three days. I let one completely loose it while I was blowing 'kisses' to him. My passenger kept saying "Why are you pissing him off?" Er, because I can, and this is a hire car... and I don't get to practice evasive driving often enough.

On a completely different tack... a couple of years ago, Vis and I were working, independently on similar projects. This was putting a camera/recorder/transmitter/battery inside a football. Yesterday I started to read the current edition of "Inside GNSS" magazine. On page 14, there's an article entitled SMART BALL. Apparently Adidas now have their Innovation Team working on it with a 6 axis MEMS Accelerometer inside it. Nothing new here, move on Adidas... Put a piggin' camera or three in one!

You had me at "bread knife". lol

I guess I should say "Thank you" but I live in a different world. Last week we had visitors from Savannah. I sold 'him' a dozen or more firearms and two 12G shotguns for cash and maybe 1,000 rounds of center fire ammo and maybe 700 rounds of .22Lr and not sure of how many 12 gauge shot gun shells. His wife bought 2 chrome plated .25acp semi-auto 'pearl handle' pistols and 'he' sold her some ammo! No paperwork used or needed, or anyone to notify. (I'm going to miss GA) Thinking of buying a new Wingmaster in Walmart next week when my pension hits the bank. My wife nicked the cash...
But enough about guns.
More US troops off to Iraq (The locals call it "EYE-Rack" two separate words.) to protect the last lot up some mountain. Who's going to protect them? "Missiom-Creep"?

You just sold a lot of guns yet you're going to buy a new Wingmaster?...you are a glutton for punishment aren't you. The only thing more heartbreaking than losing your gun is losing your dog. Maybe you can bring the Remington back with you if the rulers in the UK deem that you have a need and are of sound mind and body? Of course you can only use it to kill those vicious birds and not self defense. Yes, you will miss Georgia. :)

Almost zero crime, other than in the traditionally black part of town, where drug users break into other druggies homes to steal drugs and/or money to buy drugs. One murder in 35 years with a bread knife deemed self defense. The local paper has a "Police Blotter" and a "Sheriff's Desk" that shows what happened in the last week.
If I remember, I'll buy the paper and copy that part and post it here. Here's a clue to what it's like; The paper is dated Thursday, but comes out on Wednesday... Yes Howard, I'll miss GA! BTW, we are 'up wind' of Ft. Stewart, home of the 82nd Airborne. 5 groups of 4 "Jolly Greens" (that weren't green) have just gone over at about 100 feet (we have 65 foot tall pine trees) with some where the tops are missing! I wonder what they are training for. The cammo sand colour was probable a clue as was the Arabic writing on the belly of one group...
Coffee time. Plus I promised myself I wouldn't post here any more, too busy writing/rewriting web pages and leaflets/brochures on new kit, and up dating old stuff. Last thing, did a web site revue to find that the most used word in search phrases, is "Body" followed by "Camera" then "Module"
"Big Tit's" was the 52nd search phrase! I don't think I have 'Tit's' at all!

Ahhh, Ft. Stewart then. My hunting buddy has an uncle who lives just outside of Vidalia. He was stationed at Ft. Stewart in the 70s. Said there was almost no deer there then, now over run with them and he hunts it regularly. I think I know why you ramble on every now and then...you been breathing too much high octane fuel vapors.:)

Every morning when I walk the 'little dog' around the perimeter and get to my next door neighbours 2 acre garden, I count the deer tracks that come out of the mature pecan orchard behind us, then cross the (dirt) road and into the new pecan orchard opposite our property. Then we walk down the road to the end of our property, and on the way down check how many deer and 'hogs' come back. Today it was 6 and 4 deer, and 3 hogs going one way.
By the way Gareth, Chicago has eased the handgun ban and crime has gone down a significant amount. Funny that!

I'd be setting up an automatic feeder in my yard and zipping them with my bow from the back porch. Mmmmm, venison. :)

If I even suggested that in a joking manner, I would be living here in the office/workshop instead of the house. Think it's time to mow a bit of grass, or do the afternoon 'walk the dog' around the perimeter. I need to check my personal programming, as it maybe that my wife wants to walk her dog. The two cats are mine, the dog is my wife's. Never liked an animal that wants to lick my face after just licking it's arse and nuts. Yes, I know. I'm a fussy old bugger.

Last time a thread like this came up a ton of liberal PC law abidding p*ssy motherf*cking cry babies acted like the poster was trying to arm Not So Great Britian with free nukes and no health care.

Nice to see it did not happen to this one, maybe someone shot them. LOL That was back when the forum was full of all these Kung Fu types who needed no weapon for there jobs down range, bet they worked static in the chow hall checking ID's.

.......bet they worked static in the chow hall checking ID's.

Oh, they're still here lurking around somewwhere posting about their glorious careers as pen pushers and copying and pasting from combat and policing manuals written by another bunch of desk jockeys. Bad enough facing the enemy without watching your back for the little sneaky bastards behind you. Fcukers like that should be put up against a wall and shot the day war breaks out.

On a bit of a tangent as we touched on UK gun ownership (and the basic impossibility thereof), Italy has some very odd gun laws, like not allowing military calibers such as 9x19, 5.56, 7.62, etc. These have zero impact and are basically unenforced since 9x21IMI is fine (which will fire lugers), as is 223rem and 308win, and they're all interchangeable anyway.

The only thing that is a bit of a hindrance is the limit of 200 rounds of "pistol' ammo (1500 for rifle, which is fine) although that can be pushed to 600 if you show cause (and as always the italians are flexible with this).

For the rest, the entire body of gun legislature is dictated by a couple lines in TULPS 57 that state that you can't set off dangerous explosions in populated areas unless done safely, and they should be directed away from the public and roads. Literally 2 really vague lines.

In fact this year I opened a shooting range. Paperwork required? Zero. I bought some land, started shooting (a hill serves as backstop). I go through 800-1000 rounds per weekend. no one has even complained. Last weekend I walked back to the road that runs along the field, with full battle rattle, armor, glock, M4, etc. to find a man having an impromptu barbecue with his 2 young daughters at the edge of my property. Didn't think anything of it, offered me lunch and had his girls throw some sausages on the fire for me.

All this to say I see you poor Brits going to Poland and other places just to be able to shoot. Get a group together and contact me any time. We'll set you up dirt cheap. Save on travel, camp onsite, and you can hang in the Modena/Bologna area enjoying great weather, beautiful country, supercars, italian women, amazing food, and good wine... instead of borscht and babushkas.

As it's supposed to be the European Union there's nothing unified about weapon laws!
Greg, just out of interest what's the gun-crime/wpns held per capita ratio like over your way?
Home invasions became a whole new phenonemon in Australia when they brought the weapon ban in after the pretty dodgy Port Arthur shooting in Tassie.
I'm sure that Hungerford would also present the same inconsistencies if an experienced researcher had a squiz.
99.9999% of all perpetrators in these events are seeing a shrink and on some powerful meds.
Every mass shooting over last 20 years has one thing in common... and it's not guns - NaturalNews.com
The answer to this problem is thus to ban big-pharma selling dodgy mind-altering drugs not take the right of self-defence away from the public.
But that's really never going to happen as big-pharma owns govts.

"Hungerford" and accurate historical reporting belong in separate books...
Plus I agree with you on who owns and controls who.
