Here is a list of books/resources I recommend, please feel free to add to it.

pathophysiology: the biological basis for disease in adults and children. (2010 by Mccance and Huether)

This book will teach you all you need to know about diseases. From their origins to their manifestations in patients. Goes deep to cellular level, so will take a lot of time reading it. You can buy a student workbook for it. Its expensive, but worth it.

Bates guides to physical assessment and history taking (2007 bickley)

In depth book about patient assessment, mainly in a clinical setting but can be applied to the back of ambulance or makeshift field hospital. Will give you in depth knowledge on how to assess a patient thoroughly and what abnormalities you are looking for.

Principles of anatomy and physiology (tortora and derrickson 12th edition)

very good anatomoy and physiology book. Main theme is homeostasis, though the chapters are broken down in to the systems. Some people dont like it, but its my favourite. Goes to cellular level, including histology.

Emergency care in the streets (nancy caroline)

Seems to be the paramedic book of choice at the moment. So of it is useless in my opinion, but it is a very thick book and there is lots of useful chapters. Especially on prehospital pharmacology and paramedic/EMT practical skills.

PHTLS Basic and Advanced Prehospital Trauma Life Support (NAEMT)

There is a new one coming out in september 2010. But 5 and 6th editions are still very relevant and up to date. All you'll need to know about pre hospital trauma, inlcuding skills and recognising life threatening injuries. comes in a military edition.

12-Lead Ecg: The Art of Interpretation (garcia)

All you need to know about pre hosital ECGs. Written by someone who spent time on the road. Its an american book I think but still very applicable to UK. Its set out a bit odd (printing of pages faces an odd direction, like a flip book) but it is a very good, easy read.

Its good for skills and procedures and some pathophys, but I personally think its better to look at specialist books for that type of info. I've got a few more that i'l update later.

BMA guide to medicines and drugs

Dont bother with a BNF. If you get the full size version of this book, it has way more information about where the drugs act and how they work, not just dosages. There is also a classification table, so if you find some punter face down in a mound of pills, you will more than likely be able to identify them.

Cochrane Library

There is a huge resource of medical journals. It is peer reviewed, so a lot of the sh*t doesnt make it in. A lot of up to date papers. You'll need this a lot for assignments when having to referrence work!

Athens account

Similar to above, if you are employed by a trust, then it is free. Access to a wide variety of medical journals.

And Rob, heres my golden tip, the way I learnt all my A&P and Pathphys, is to write your own book! I know it sounds long winded (it is!) but its a great revision tool. Use all the resources you can gather and put it in your own words! steal some diagrams off google images and make it a .pdf file. You can print it off and get bound at a copy place, then you've got a book with all the need to know and none of the sh*te!

that is a very good idea Damole you should sell that book if you made 1 your self it would be a best seller!!I am going to get around to starting that at the weekend when i am off.you going to go for your paramedic course soon mate?

Credibility and copyright issues! I have no desires to be an authour. Just a good medic! Currently going through module J assignments. Hoping for a medic course in the new year before the olympics kicks off!

you right too mate thats all i want to be also is a good medic really looking forward to the placements and get to use the skills learned.I would love to work in the uk as a paramedic but going to go to Australia and chance a service there. Will the NHS be looking for a lot of bank staff for 2012?

your uni will provide a reading list that is suitable to your course. But for those not affilated to a uni and just want to brush up, I would definately recommend starting with ross and wilson and then finding something harder like tortora when you have a good grasp on it.

not sure about bank work, but there are loads of private companies offering work in the mean time. You probably wont get as much patient contact, but you'll still get some!

If your looking to get some extra paid hands on time, try this company. They use student paramedics as bank staff for summer events. I envy you mate. I tried to go back to university to train to become a paramedic but I was unsuccessful with Greenwich university and St Georges university. However there's nothing stopping me from applying again soon.

EVENT PARAMEDICS

Thanks bravomedic and as trying to become a para you will get there you just have to keep pluging away at it.did you try ppa international thats who i am training with and i can not say enough good things about them and the course.I am a month in to my 51 lectures and it is very tuff and goes in depth into all the lectures.I will be doing placements to get me up to 1500 clinical hrs and have been emailing services in oz with good feed back. They want to see 1080 hrs before they will give me RPL against the dip in paramedic science in oz.Also ppa have told me that the HPC approved the course because you get reg with AREMT.Best of look with your goal mate just do not give up.

Also ppa have told me that the HPC approved the course because you get reg with AREMT.Best of look with your goal mate just do not give up.

Hang on, If I complete the PPA international course and register myself with the AREMT, can I then use that to register with the HPC in the UK?

As you know HPC will look at every case individually and it will come down to how much clinical experience you get with ppa etc etc.. and what you have done before you do the course. It said on the ppa info for the paramedic course that the HPC approve AREMT, and ppa reg you with AREMT after you pass the exams.Check out the AREMT website also.I am going to oz after i finish the course and going to do a top up degree to get paramedic science degree over there with RPL.Hopefully when i come back(i mean if) i will get reg at home as an advanced paramedic on the rrv's..!Iam going chance the HPC when i have my 1500 clinical hours completed and see what the response will be.Can't hurt in trying.
