Lazcano Killed in Mexico

This is very big news - if it's true.
The early pictures appear to give a confirmation - but further evidence needed.
Lazcano (aka "el Lazca") was one of the two top capo's running the Zetas drug cartel.
This leaves Trevino in charge.
There will be endless speculation about whether Mexican spec. forces tracked down el Lazca, or if he was sold out by Trevino (as a method for taking over leadership of the Zetas).

Various rumors swirling about this event.
Some facts as reported don't appear to make sense.
* News said that Lazcano was only with 2-3 bodyguards. That's not his usual style. He usually has at least half a dozen Kabiles (Guatemalan spec ops).
* The body was apparently transferred to relatives quickly - after fingerprints were taken. Again seems doubtful this would happen normally.

Lazcano has faked his own death before. Could this incident be the death of a double made to look like Lazcano? Only DNA confirmation can confirm the real outcome.

The body of one of Mexico's most feared drug barons - known as The Executioner - has been snatched from a funeral home just hours after he was killed outside a baseball game by marines.

Heriberto Lazcano and an accomplice died in a hail of bullets in a firefight with Mexican forces in the lawless badlands of Progreso, Coahuila, about 80 miles west of the Texas border, near Laredo, on Sunday night.

Around 1.30am on Monday, just a few hours after the bodies had been studied, a group of armed men raided the funeral home where the bodies were being kept.

They 'subdued' its staff and took both corpses in one of the funeral home's cars, Coahuila state Attorney General Homero Ramos said.

Just after 8am, the owner of the funeral home called the attorney general's office to report that the body had been stolen, Ramos said.

The bodies have yet to be recovered but fingerprints taken from the body before it disappeared confirmed it was the corpse of Lazcano.

The former Mexican army commando was leader of the notorious Zetas cartel and is suspected to have masterminded hundreds of killings, including the June 2004 slaying of Francisco Ortiz Franco, a top editor of a crusading weekly newspaper in Tijuana that often reported on drug trafficking.

Lazcano, also known as 'El Verdugo' (the Executioner) for his brutality, was considered such an influential crime boss that the US government had put a $5million price on his head and Mexico an additional $2.3 million for information leading to his arrest

yeah - the whole thing has the smell of bad fish.
all they've got to prove it was Lazcano ... are some pix and some fingerprints.
And now the body is gone. Very convenient.

I agree that this one stinks to high heaven. I also believe that he may have faked his death as well. These people are clever and not quite as stupid as people believe they are. I am not agreeing with his life style. These guys have a street savvy that sorta reminds me of Don Pablo. The difference is that Don Pablo actually done something for his community and these people are just killing and killing and more killing. There is a great book out called Killing of Pablo by mark bowden. I'm not at all convinced that it was Colombian military that actually pulled the trigger. Personally I think it was the American military that did this one. Just the cynic in me says that.

I'll tell you why I find this story about Lazcano questionable. By the way - I do agree that the photos of his face (from the dead body) are a VERY close match to the photo's on file. Some would almost say - too close of a match. What are the chances that the guy would still have an identical haircut to the same one he had years ago?? But anyway, that's not my main problem. If you think about it - the story line is that he was killed under fire by Mexican Marines. Presumably they were using automatic rifles. If you look at the body ... it's in remarkably good condition. No damage to the face at all, almost no damage to the chest except for one small bullet wound. I mean really??? After being gunned down in a fierce exchange of fire against special forces?? It looks a lot more like someone wanted to preserve the face on that body at all cost :-)

tapmaster - you could well be right about the Americans taking down the drug lord. I'll tell you a little story. Many years ago I was wandering around southern Africa and came across an American guy. He had re-trained to work in the health industry. But originally he was USA special forces in S. America. He was a sniper actually. And his main job was to shoot the guard dogs that protected the ranches owned by the drug kingpins. He would take down the dogs, and the rest of the team would go across the perimeter. That's America for you - specialization. This guy shot guard dogs. Hahahahaha! But it's true - that's what he did.
