"LinkedIn" - Anyone Use It

Just wondering if anyone uses LinkedIn online, and if they find it of use; or is it just another social neyworking tool of mass-destruction?!

Lets take it that we are all clever enough to understand and use common sence concerning such services - no blasts about poor skills or persc please.

I am on there, i don't spend much time on linkedin, it does come off as just another "work" related social networking site, i am not impressed as such with it. But that's just my opinion

Rupert:

I use LinkedIn as well, under a different user name than the one that I use here on CPW. It is useful for work-related networking, but not much else. LinkedIn can complement, but not replace, what you get here on CPW. It can reach out to a much greater number of people (potential clients) than you could reach via CPW.

If you decide to use LinkedIn, then consider OPSEC / PERSEC and use good judgement about the information you include in your public LinkedIn profile.

Regards,

Dave

I use linkedin. It is a great networking tool, however I would echo the PERSEC issues. That said, if anyone wants to connect then do PM me.

Same here -useful for the work contacts and keeping track on who is where. I personally disabled the public profile function so do not appear on the generic name search. Had no problems with it...yet

LinkedIn is indeed business networking only.
Companies who find my profile on LinkedIn do contact me.

I recently discovered whilst conducting a google search on a persons name that it I could find him through linkedIn. I'd think twice about registering.

I have been on Linkedin since it started and find it very useful . I have been contacted sveral times though Linkedin for advice and information concerning my area of expertise and over the past few years have been offered plenty of work which I have forwarded onto colleagues. Like most sites of this nature you should be careful on persec...howver like most sites of this nature it's how you use them that counts.

Linkedin is a little better than facebook.
Its a spy nest thougj and full of gov personel seeking certain details.

Its great for companies seeking contacts and to build a network in order to get contracts.

If you are a cpo forget it, companies get 50 cv's a day and don't need to hunt on linkedin. For a cpo.

It is a nest and not just to gov ops but also defense contractors as well looking for info that are contracted for this type of work. If you know what all you are looking for you can find many on World Wide Covert Surveillance, HUMINT, NDIA and ATAB. There was one called ODA last year then the group changed to Extreme then Black Water Alumni and now it has another name and all with the same group manager who was an 18A Maj. that served for an 11 til CAG ran its course now the F*cker gets to just get paid for fishing. Not a bad gig really!

Youre right about being careful with it. I googled my girls name just after we started dating and she didnt even know she was on there, it came up with her full work details. She had never registered with them so im not entirely sure its always up to the person who is on there at all.

A friend of mine suggested that I registered with it so I did. I've only viewed it a few times and have been sent several invites from people that have nothing to do with the industry I'm in. I'm sure some people have found it a useful tool, but I don't think it's for me.
It feels like facebooks grown up brother. I registered with that and started getting friend requests from people I hadn't spoken to in years. If I haven't spoken to you in years, why would I want to speak to you now!? And why do I want to know that 'Joe Blogs as build a fence in farmsville' or 'Dave doesn't like his trousers'. All seems a bit pointless to me.

I echo a lot of what's been said here, however I would say 99% of people on CPW and LinkedIn really have nothing to worry about from government 'spies'.

Time people woke up and realised that just because they hold a CP badge it does not make them of interest to any shady intelligence gatherers.

Wake up, get a job and keep it real!!!

Derfel, legendary and could'nt of put it better myself. I use facebook and linked in and have actually got work, within this industry from both, regimental pages of facebook and through links of my links on linked in. I think a few people do need to wake up and smell the coffee, with regard to what we do. Fair enough, a few, may have and are involved with extremely high echelons of power, alot of others just pretend to be. You don't need to put a photo of yourself on, you don't need to even use your regular email address, but one you have set up for that purpose only. You don't even have to put where you are, you put on as much or as little as you wish. Also, you can make it all invisible to everyone, except those you want to see it. I don't think its rocket science to understand that what ever you do, you should be careful, but at the end of the day, most emails are john.bloggs@hotmail.co.uk and you can find anything out from 192.com and other sources quite easily.

Anyway, I think we've digressed there slightly, its a tool that can be useful, end of dit.
