They are 1 of only a few companies who are ELCAS registered.

???

Charles,

ELCAS is a type of funding for EX service men and women whereby if TP are registered with them doing specific courses they fund upto 80% of the cost.

They only have ELCAS because they blag it! SSO/STCW95 etc is not a Level 3 course but they put some crap irrelevant module in there to justify it being a Level 3. And guys have to stay in Military accommodation but it still costs £2400! Total rip off IMHO!

i did my SSO course with them in Topsham. Good company c%%p subject. Total death by power point

just did my SSO with MSS .... totally agree with the death by power point... sure its prob similar anywhere you go mind... but its a tick in a box. good company.

As I mentioned in a previous post I did my SSO's with EOS Risk Management who are also ELCAS registered. They also combine the CSO's and PFSO's together to make it a level 3. I don't think being able to use ELCAS with them was a rip off. It saved me hundreds of pounds!!

Also warsash maritime academy in Southampton are ELCAS registered too, STCW was £1000 but only paid £200, saved me a lot as well.

did anybody get info on employers while doing any courses because there seems to be loads of training websites but very few recruiting

this course was death by power point, but its the tick in the box you need and the bloke that does the lectures even puts up the answers at the end, well he did on mine. winner !!!

Hi, does any 1 know what is the best security company out there which is currently elcas registered and is providing good quality trg.

Donald, as I mentioned above EOS are registered with ELCAS and ran a good course. Give them a ring and ask about their Vessel Protection Officers course that they are starting in 2012 I thnk that will be ELCAS eligible and more relevant than the SSO course.

yeah there ok mate, its death by powerpoint for the whole course. its just a tick in the box that the companys want. And ctc is not far to use for accom

Guys, I think a lot of the comments are right concerning SSO/CSO/PFSO, its not a particularly rivetting or particularly relevant course to actually performing the job and its the job of companies like ours to make it interesting and relevant. It has, rightly or wrongly become a benchmark and a screening tool for employers. The industry is however changing rapidly and is increasingly regulated by the UN (in the form of the International Maritime Organisation) and ships insurers and governing state (flag state). We as employers have to tick a huge amount of boxes for our operatives and the IMO Maritime Security Circular 1405 has dictated to a great extent what we have to ensure you guys have training and experience-wise. In order to meet this Eos put together an all encompassing course, the Vessel Protection Officer course. This is truly a level 3 course and has been approved for ELC and CTP funding for service leavers. The key component in this is our Level 3 Maritime Security Risk Management Module which gives you much more relevant training to enter the MARSEC sector such as assessments, layered defence systems, training crew etc. this is combines with STCW95 (all 4 modules), SSO/CSO/PFSO, Weapons System Management and a couple of other smaller modules. This course wasnt particularly designed for external delivery it was actually designed for our own operatives who are being put through a rolling programme to get them all approved and to meet all of the industry's requirements. We do of course want to capitalise on this and are happy to advise anyone who is interested in entering the sector or who are already in and have been asked by employers to get specific qual's. The VPO and other courses are listed on our site if anyone wishes to take a look. We can also advise on ELC as it can be a little complicated. Resettlement Offices also have info on this course if you ask.

Hope this helps. The main thing is to look at the requirements from the IMO as mentioned previously, as generaly what they say becomes mandatory.
