NEWBIE LOOKING FOR ADVICE (Maritime)

Hi There,

First of all let me thankyou in advance for taking the time to read this and if i do get replys those as well.

i have recently completed a MSCO SSO STWC MFSC ENG 1 and have Yellow Fever and would like to know if this is enough to get me statred or are there other courses that future contracts may find more appealing.

this is my first post on here even though i have been a member for a few weeks but it has taken this long to finally read through the various posts, and jotting down the numerous pieces of advice that has been given out.

I am under no illusion that the industry is a dog eat dog world with 100's vying for the same job but id like to be the one that stands out.

What is the best way to network if you are new to the industry?
how hard is it for a newbie to get a contract when your up against people with experiance?

i know they are everyday questions but peoples advice would be greatly recieved

Think this thread woud he bettering the Maritime forum (perhaps the Gods will move it).

Firstly well done for reading the threads.

In answer to your questions:
1. Seamans Card & Discharge Book would help.
2. On here and LinkedIn are a good start. Use our military contacts. Do you know someone who is already in the industry that would give you a recommend. Do you know any Ops Managers? Go through every company that is listed on here answer who is recruiting. Send the your cv, follow it up by email and phone then tell them that you are in XYZ on Wed and ask if you can come in for chat. It means your going to have to fork out money in petrol for what might only be 10 mins but you'll get face time with the ops.
3. Very very hard. There plenty of guys out there with experience that can't get work. Although it does depend on your background.

firstly i was unsure as to put this in the maritime section, as in the forum i just saw the new to the industry, so assumed i put it there but assumption is the mother of all %*&! ups so i guess your right lol.

my background is inf mainly recce and int plt for tours of northern ireland

Firstly, well done for sifting the the ream's of threads on here about Maritime Security, just a quick couple of questions mate, you say recce and int in NI, if this was SF stuff it may put you high on the pecking order, When did you demob? I know my last Tour of NI was back in 2002, the reason I ask is that a lot of companies are asking for a minimum of 5 - 10 years military service and you must have been operational in a hostile environment within the last 5 or so years.

Below is a list of expected quals an operator is likely to turn up with in the current environment

- CLEAN CRB
- STCW95
- SSO course has no real relevance to this line of work but, it does give you an insight into the laws and environment you will work in and many shipping companies insist that you have it, you are not going on board to be a SSO!!!!
- IMO Model Counter Piracy Course
- Maritime Firearms Competency Course
- ENG1
- Seaman’s Card & Discharge Book (MARSEC companies can get these for you)
- Yellow Fever
- Between 5 and 10 years’ relevant military experience minimum
- Operational in hostile environment in last 5 - 10 years

A couple of suggestions to make your self more employable, gain a civilian medical qualification like FPOS-I/MIRA etc and some additional quals like RYA Radar and VHF course.

I would suggest that you give this line of work serious thought though, as you will only break through if you are determined and willing to put the effort in, i.e by taking Standto's advice, and even then with the current climate here it will take a little bit of luck to get the foot in the door and all the cash you have paid out may be for nothing. So, if you are working at present, please do not give up the day job until you have a set of flight tickets in your hand.

hello again,

thanks for all the advice i have booked myself on fpos course so the only other thing left for me to achive is the vhf, if i was a yank then yes i would say i was SF as they all seem to be for some reason on here !!! but i was infantry i left in 2008 after the wife gave birth.

i have no intention of giving up the day job just yet, but being self employed at the min is not easy either!

for the past few weeks i have done hours of research on companys etc and so far have a list of 27. If nothing i am determined to break into this industry i like everyone else just need the luck and a chance. The networking continues lol
