ppa international paramedic course?

If I have misunderstood the Irish EMT role then I apologise and I welcome the opportunity to be corrected.

I took my information from here EMT Emergency and here Phecc Gateway Services and also spoke to an ex Irish EMT who is working for us as an EMT. There seemed to be a big difference between what PHECC call an EMT and what the NHS call an EMT and the Irish Paramedic is certainly not the same as a UK paramedic.

All the best.

The funny thing ukpara is there is not much difference between Irish EMT and an Irish Paramedic some up skilling to 12 lead and LMA's etc etc... and the job would be done.Like everything in Ireland we do it back wards.I know the Irish Paramedic is some what similar to the UK tech. The standard may be different but the US EMT-B is a lower standard of training again, and there still called EMT's.As you know ukpara it differs everywhere in the world.Again mate I'm not having ago at you,i am not like that:)

What Phecc did was up skilled there EMT's to paramedic with a few more skills like 12 lead and LMA's and a hand full of med's and called them 'paramedics"more of a name change than a skills change if you know what i am saying. Then gave the minimum standard to work in an ambulance EMT not EMFR (this change was for privates on HSE calls and private transfers and the vol's redcross etc..) and created a new EMT course which in turn was the old EMT course with a few exceptions! And to this day it is still a grey area as it was so nicely put to me.This is why i want to go to AUS and work or the UK and work as a real Paramedic as you will never get to advanced para in Ireland unless you are 4 years in the HSE and get accepted onto the course.I have seen doctors train quicker than this route mate.:confused:

Seems a bit of a mess I'm not surprised you want out! Come to the UK it's only over the water and there is plenty of work. The IHCD reciprocate HSE/PHECC qualifications and you would already hold a C1 driving ticket which is the same in RoI and UK.

Plenty of qualified EMT places at the moment in the NHS go to NHS Jobs and you can see the vacancies there. The NHS are looking at upskilling EMTs to Paramedic (UK paramedic that is) and WMAS in particular would take you on with your experience.

Your on the ball ukpara it is some mess over here and will be for some time.Ever since i completed my training i wanted out because of the standards.I started looking at the UK and seen that the training standard was much higher as the UK has had paramedics since the 70's unlike Roi since 2006 and i mean real paramedics (our advanced paramedics).I have my C and D1 for the last 3 years as the ambulance we use is a 5 ton box body ford transit.Very under powered with a 2.2L turbocharged engine pulling a 5 ton body.I would love to work in the UK and applied for college's under the UCAS but worked out that i just couldn't afford to become a student for 3 years.I will keep an eye on the NHS website also.I would go down the NHS route.I just think it is time to get my backside in gear and start making things happen for me rather than wait for them to happen.:)I would have no problem up skilling to a Tech in the UK,then work my way up to Para. Not like at home have a title of 'paramedic"and when it comes down to on the road, have to turn around to someone's relative and say 'sorry i can't give fluids" or I can't give cardiac drugs we have to wait for ALS that could be up to a half hour away.. (so we 'load and go" for a half hour drive on bad roads to met the AP's on route ) and for that relative to then say... BUT your a paramedic..... why can't you give the drugs????and then the medic try's to explain why..!!!I have seen this happen as i work with a 'paramedic" who is very very good at he's job and is sick of this also.Sorry for the rant:D

Our new Mercs are the 2.2 as well and they keep blowing up. The engine can't handle the weight and doesn't have the power. All in the name of reducing emissions apparently!

I wouldn't mind but there is nothing worse then trying to pass a truck or something and you go to put the booth down and the truck starts pulling away from you..!!!:) Our transit is in getting serviced at the moment and we have a Vauxhall Movano 3.2 turbo with the air suspension, comfortable van but no space to work in then.Have ye had much trouble with the tail lifts in the mercs?Like them going on fire or just refusing to work?

Hi mate. I worked in the Queensland Ambulance Service for 7 years. The service actively recruits experienced staff to fill staff shortages and save training dollars from the UK. Paramedics are their target recruitment group, but they are short and if you are willing to go somewhere remote that may improve your chances of getting in. They assess each individual on their skill level and service, then slot you into the system somewhere. Example what they call a "Charlie Paramedic" could provide BLS, administer basic cardiac drugs, nebulised salbutamol and penthrane analgesia; if you joined at that level, you may recieve credit points and enter the diploma course at second year. It's a good system as you get paid whilst you learn with on road exposure. To be honest, if the training you recieve is not from a recognised ambulance service or a university affilitated with an ambulnce service (for clinical placements) your chances of being accepted are slim. It seems ambulances services in Australia don't view private education providers with much confidence. Which is a shame as I recently did the PHERT program as a skills refesher with First Response Australia in Cairns and it was excellent.

paramedic training

i know the open university now are doing the paramedic diploma, all you need is your ambulance employer to allow you to complete this course with them as invigilators,
good luck

Hi Robbiemol,
I have attended the PPA Int Tac Med/EMT Course with them.
On passing the course you then are registered with the Australian EMT Registry for 1 year only...this means you need to do follow up trg (easily done by paying to work in Sarajevo for a week with PPA or work with a UK ambulance service as a 3rd person responder), this will get your ticks in the boxes on your logbook for re-registration for the year....
Any more questions please ask and I will let you know your issues???
