Hi folks,

Some advice much appreciated. I'd like to know if I need to repeat a CP course or do a refresher, or is my 2007 Control Risks CP course still accepted as I have worked in the CP sector since then, never needed SIA badge as I was out in Iraq for Americans as Security Escort Team Lead.

I need to apply for CP SIA asap for upcoming deployment.

would like some help on what to do regarding my past training and experience.

Thanks for the reply, I am just still doubtful a little as it's saying on SIA website anything as in course / training outside 3 yrs past is no good ?

Can you confirm, or can anyone else give some advice to this.

anyone course older than 3 yrs is not accepted. As I said above, completed all my courses in 2007 very good training providers, when time came to get the license / I think mid 2009 I did not need it any longer. And then 2011 i went back to CP in Iraq for Americans, and they just wanted to know i was properly trained and the cert was enough, they did not require the actual blue badge. Looks like not intentionally dodging the badge has cost the fee for a new course !! :( maybe i'll have to suck eggs and cough up some dough ?

Any Training providers reading, anyone offering a slight discount to a well trained and experienced operator would be more than a appreciated !

If you have been employed in that sector continually you don't need to retrain. However, you should get some evidence of your employment, something saying the type of work you have been doing.

That said, you are then relying on the people processing your application to actually understand the SIA's own rules, good luck with that one!

I hear you, and I always believed that if you worked in the industry since your CP course and had proof, like employers references etc then you could get badged, but from what i'm reading on the SIA site is anything older than 3 yrs is no good, apparently as the syllabus has changed / regardless of been doing CP in Iraq etc ??

I'm wondering if it's up to the Course Provider? If their satisfied of my past training and current employment then they can decide to offer me a refresher course or ... I don't know.

Any course providers advice without just trying to score another 3k? And I don't claim any of them are or do, it's just I know their are a lot of providers out there, and yeah, not everyone has the integrity to say "yeah, you don't need to pay us the 3k, you just need the 400 pound refresher"

A friend of mine was recently refused a frontline CPO licence because it had expired while he was engaged on other, non-cp, tasks.

He enquired about renewing and was told he would need to retrain and that a refresher would not be sufficient. He checked and confirmed this.

As you have never possessed an SIA Licence for close protection the qualification you submit must have been achieved less than three years prior to your application.

As you obtained your qualification in 2007 you will have to take the complete Level 3 Certificate in Close Protection. Which must be accredited by one of these Awarding Bodies; Buckinghamshire New University, City & Guilds, Edexcel, HABC, IQ.

You have said you were working abroad, if you spent six months or more outside of the UK, you must provide a criminal record check from the countries you worked in. The check will need to cover the last five years.

You have said you need the licence for an upcoming appointment. If this is working for an ACS company you can be deployed while your application is being processed under an LDN (licence dispensation notice) which the company can give you.

So in theory if you booked a course starting Monday you could be working four weeks from now.
 
Before someone pulls the Recognition of Prior Learning' (RPL) card these qualifications would also have to be no more than three years old.

If "the lawless" had served in any of the following I am sure he would have mentioned it :o)

Special Air Service regiment Body Guard Course
Royal Military Police Close Protection Course
Metropolitan Police Royalty Protection/Special Branch Close Protection Course
Police National Close Protection Courses including Northern Ireland

If he had remained in an operational close protection role, after leaving service, he would not have to undertake further training. He will still be required to take the knowledge test and a practical skills assessment.

Anyone with Foreign Service or Qualifications from other countries should enquire from trainers offering an accredited courses as they may be able to get RPL for parts of the course.

It would seem I would need to retrain ! And reference working abroad and needing a Criminal record check, I was in Iraq working for the Yanks, hence not needing my SIA badge. I understand the reference to needing a CRB from a country you worked in if it was over 6 months, but I think Iraq doesn't count - I hope ! As getting a CRB from the Iraqi MOI / I think a lotto win would be easier!
