Gents,

The MCA have been informed by the issuing authority RSS of SC/DB cease issuing them to personnel conducting Armed Security. This has been confirmed and in full effect. If you are planning on coming into the maritime security industry I would mark time on spending any money on training as if you cant get the said documents it is very un-lightly that you will get employment from a PMSC.

This only applies to UK Personnel so keep your cash in your pocket until it changes!!!!!

S4S Out!

This does nt really stop guys working, as in 2010 before I could apply for the book/card when I was working on a vessel that was not English, Or under the MCA regulations for a seaman's book I had a self made template letter that I would print off and ask the master to sign and stamp to prove that I had been on the vessel.

I thought you are entitled to a Seamans Card if you're a British Citizen?

Discharge book is a different matter mind - you need the 'Ship' bit

Its not about tax issues its about getting a job. In some countries you cannot get in without a seamans Card/Discharge Book. In some other countries you cannot get on a plane without one. PMSC cannot book you seamans flights without one. Extra Baggage allowance is not permitted without one. Transit visas are not allowed without one in some countries. So the bottom line is that it could have very large implications for individuals not already possessing one.

only when classed as a seafarer which armed security personnel are not according to the issuing authority RSS who direct the MCA in issuing.

The only time that I have shown my seaman's book was at the airport. Back in 2010 the company would provide a letter to say that we are boarding a vessel to the airport check in. I have never had to show my card to anyone.

I've had to show my Seamans book many times, at both airports abroad whilst applying for transit visas and in the UK while traveling on seamans tickets.

I have to agree with bigscottyboy. I have just arrived in Madagascar and had to show both the letter from my company and my seaman's book both in London and when I arrived here, and it' isn't the first time either.
It may be we are just unlucky and you where lucky but sooner or later it is bound to catch you out.

Many I times I've had to show my book and letter before checking in thats Uk and other countries. Also in Jedda I've had had pages of discharge book stamped instead of passport. I also know lads that have never been ask as well.

Your OK to board letter might get you though....are companies going to risk it and waste money/face if you get stopped because YOU don't have a seaman card and discharge book?...unless your a complete muppet you already know the answer...
the ship has sailed..

If you can't get a British seamans book / card then you can always get an Isle of Man discharge / card very easy for your company to apply for and takes days to get to you

I am half way through my courses and just heard that you no longer need a seamans discharge and passport etc,

I'm a bit confused on the situation tbh. Can someone make sense of it for me
Cheers

You'll need your blue book for KSA- of that there is no doubt as they love fu cking around and showing how important they are.
As already noted earlier in the thread you probably won't be able to get a one-way flight anywhere without the red book either.
I've only been asked about 5 times in the last 4yrs and if I didn't have it I couldn't have done the task.

Anyone needs a seamans book pm me I'll send you the paperwork for free without selling you anything on the way.

:-)
