Starting a small company

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice for a friend who is looking to start a small private investigation company for cheating partners.

He was just looking to find out about the legal aspects of running a PI company carrying out surveillance etc

Also any information on carrying out research on people such as finding addresses? Find out who a mobile is registered to. I know it can be done in America but not sure about the UK

Thanks in advance

Ben

Ben,

Tricky one. In all honesty I am not sure this question could be answered in a reply properly. Legally, you must be registered with the ICO which takes 2 seconds and costs 35 quid (this is until of course regulation comes into effect, then you will require an SIA Licence). Secondly you must really have an idea of what you are doing to not need these kind of questions answered on here...not just as an investigator but also how to run and operate a business.

There are PI courses available but with no past relevant experience or knowledge it could be extremely difficult (assuming he has no experience by the questions).

If he was absolutely starting from scratch i would consider the API's level 3 diploma. Its a home learning product but it is very detailed and can be studied in ones own time. I would allow at least 6 months to actually learn it properly because it is self study it is entirely down to the individual to actually take in the information. After that i would recommend a surveillance course with ISS and then complete the IQ exam ready for SIA regulation. In addition i would consider taking a photography course as well as an OS INT course. After that you would be able to think about starting out perhaps process serving and doing surveillance so long as you could find the clients and were confident. Of course I am not saying it cannot be done but it certainly is not as easy as waking up and becoming a PI. That is the absolute last thing the industry needs right now.

Knowledge of the law is essential and of course some experience in a relevant field would be a huge advantage. I hope this answers your question even if it is not ideal to hear. It can be done yes but you have to be switched on and really able to do the job legally, ethically and to a respectable standard.

The first thing "your friend" needs to do is undertake some form of formal training by the sound of it!
Try ISS or CTR both of which are reputable companies and both of which can be found on here and both of them I have no problem recommending.
99% of your friends questions will be answered I can assure you.

Ok, so if "your friend" is just going to concentrate on cheating partners then he won't be that busy. And by the sound of it " your friend" might need some training in surveillance, and as already posted Pete at ISS is your man. Then " your friend" can then reach out and do more range of work such as " off sick" cases co habitation cases and undercover theft at work cases. Finding addresses can be done through the relevant agencies, Palatine etc, but you will have to be Data Protection registered. As for finding out personal info on mobiles that is a dangerous area to get into if you do it the wrong way. Your friend will still need to purchase some cameras, video recorders, a bag kit, all of the basic equipment to get him started.

No offence, but if your 'friend' is not able to do this research himself and draw his own conclusions, maybe it's the wrong line of work for him?
Marital work is messy, unreliable and significantly more dangerous than corporate or insurance work.

I can't imagine domestic investigators every get to give people the news they want to hear either! Thankless springs to mind.

Lol,

That why I get cash in advance for all matrimonial work, they never want to be proven right, as it mean their marriage is in jeopardy and they certainly don't want to pay for it....
So up front payments only.

And a big cup of Horlicks at the end of the day.
