Unarmed Combat Training

The need (or otherwise) for unarmed combat training in Close Protection is something that has been discussed on here numerous times before. Some people believe, for UK work especially, that the need for a CPO to be trained in these skills is an outdated concept, you are effectively a glorified PA in a suit.

At Centre 22 CQC we still firmly believe in the hard skills of Close Protection. Your job is not just about what's happening, it's about what you are there to stop from happening. Many principals are labouring under the delusion that the person walking next to them is highly trained in the skills to defend and protect them, should the worst happen. How true do you believe that is? When was the last time that you trained seriously in unarmed combat? Have you any idea where you skill level is at?

Our five-day UK course has a heavy emphasis on the unarmed skills of a CPO. This is not a week's worth of Kung Fu training, we focus specifically on the scenarios and methods that are relevant to the CP arena. The material we use does not come from any particular martial art, it comes from experience, and each student's ability will be tested under increasing levels of resistance and stress. The program works through the most common types of assault from understanding control & restraint, dealing with strikes, right through to a strong emphasis on edged weapons defence.

Below is a video from one of our instructors Michael Wright, who is a professional unarmed combat instructor and an active CPO on the London circuit. If you too work in the UK market, and the firearms portion of our course is not as relevant to you, please remember that you can opt out of the live firearms weekend and just do the UK portion of the course.

If you have any queries, thoughts or strong opinions on the subject them throw them out, we'd love to hear them.
