How long should I rest.

Hi all, Im looking for some advice from suitably qualified Mil/ ex Mil, PTI's. Im ex Mil recce, with a lot of time spent under bergen and generally abusing the body, and Ive spent the last 8 years in civvi st doing endurance, marathons and triathlons, up to Ironman.

Always had buckets of motivation and fitness. Of late, Im F*****!, feel like an old man getting out of bed, stiff as a board and injuries all over. Plus no spark.

Figured the most Ive taken off in the last 10 to 15 years is 2, two week stints with no training on leave.

I need a break, But how long should I rest for the get back to form. And is rest the best option, should I consider only core work for a period of months?

Thanks in advance.

Hi OP55.

I train with an ex para PTI. He also does classes for MMA/Fitness athletes/models etc. We both agree that recuperation is at least 50% of keeping your gains and motivation in training alive. Also we never try to have the same workout twice and we are always throwing in new ways to train. This helps to avoid staleness and boredom from setting in.

You do not mention your age and I have not checked your profile out as this could be a contributing factor. IE: You need more time to recover from injuries/Phisical and mental exhaustion etc.

The first thing I would advise IMHO is to visit your Doctor. Have some tests done Blood/Diabetes etc. Also maybe some allergy tests as well to see if you have become allergic to certain food types over the years. Then take it from there. Rest and recuperation and maybe some time out for yourself mate just chilling/bimbling around until the zest starts to return.

I hope these simple ideas help in some small way. Plus I have got to admit, I never go for a decent tab without a small backpack/bergie swinging off my shoulders. Keeps the mars bars/flask and dry kit/doss bag etc safe.:)

Also I try to partake of a few pints of Guiness , just for medicinal purposes only mind you. ;)
My oppo was suffering from cramps in his feet all week. Got a few halves of the 'black stuff' down him over the weekend and problem sorted.

Wishing you well in your recovery.

Regards.

max.

Is your nutrition any good? The fuel you put in effects the results you get out and recovery time. Age is important too as Max notes. Also, are you suffering from any illness? Might be worth getting a once over if you suddenly took a notable hit to your ability to function as you normally do.

Aside that, take a month off. You won't lose much, even if you do your body will remember. Its always easier to get it back than get it in the first place, but in a month, you wont lose anything of note.

I've had a few months at a time off with many injuries and getting back into it is easier than you might think and you, well, I really did not lose as much fitness at all.

Nice one max.

I was focused on the physical side. A visit to the docs for bloods etc might be just the thing. Didnt occur to me at all. I'm only 31 so this slow down ain't really due for a while yet. I hope! Ha!

Plus a new line of training on return. Some chillin and recovering and pints of the black stuff might be just the very thing!

Should I set a time frame for the rest period, to stop from getting to eager too early?

Hi OP55.
I would go get a clean bill of health from your Doctor first mate. Then take it from there. As Scab says keep an eye on your diet as well. You may not be putting enough decent fuel into your body at times and this and any injuries/sleep deprivation etc can play havok with your bodys ability to recover. Also as it seems a tad unusual for a guy your age to be feeling like this! As i said in my previous post,it might be worth taking an allergy test just to put you in the picture as to certain foods you may be slightly allergic to. Milk/eggs/nuts etc. It certainly would not harm.

As for when to start back and at what pace. I can only humbly suggest little steps until you feel that you have fully recovered from each one . Then too keep pushing with what you feel comfortable with. Listen to your body mate, it will soon tell you when it has had enough. I will also ask my Training partner for any advice for you as well, as we will be training Wednesday.

Also there are many others on here far more qualled than me . I hope they partake of their advice for you as well mate.

Wishing you well and keep us informed as to your recovery.

max

Thanks lads.

To answer scab, diet is fairly good, good health, shit hours of work with no pattern. But hey, needs must fellas! Gonna hit the doc in the am and rule that out. Ask him about allergy testing too. After that, rest. Gonna send my kayanos off to a mate with instructions not to return em till September. Even if I aggressively change my mind before then!

The guys are right about seeing the Doc just for a quick MOT as it can't do any harm. If it persists it's worth running FBC to check you're not anaemic - something I've seen quite a bit in the guys who are downing lots of protein and energy foods and not enough iron rich foods. Then if you're taking blood anyway it's worth doing the usual malaise bloods like ESR CRP Glucose etc.
I am sure this is a perfectly good opportunity to undergo a full MOT and relax a bit, get a bit more sleep etc. Hope you're feeling at your best again soon!
