Hello mate, as an ex-rock ape, no dis-respect to my old unit, but join the royal marines or the para's!! there are also many army units which are better than the rocks and which offer more opportunities and training than the regiment!

FAC/TACP: RAF Regt

I Hear on the G-Vine that Rocks are now able to do FAC/TACP.

Now thats some thing to think about...

Nothing like dropping a 1000lber on an unsuspecting dirt bag!

They have an excellent reputation for bob-sleighing on the international competition circuit - if you are looking for something more than guarding RAF installations... I kid you not!

on the whole they are a great bunch of lads, the raf treat you better in all respects, a raf regt gunner also is a thinking soldier, not a robot, just see how highly they are regarded on sfsg, was it the booties that had to do there training package again!!!!
yes im a soon to be ex rock.
any other rocks in the cp line of work here?

"oooooooooooooooooo" scathing remark on ROYAL!!! fella join the RAF they have the monopoly on hair gel and curly fries, descent seats on a herc, and birds that don't have their legs on upside down when they join.
The RAF seem to have it sorted with the way you get treated allmost like civ pop in uniform. But if you want to play for real then its Red death or Green death they get the job done proper!!

if your looking for excitement, and get a trade at same time, so you have something to come out to, maybe consider Royal Engineers, they have both commando and para squadrons, in fact 59 is now a regt so they can support 3 cdo bde properly. Both units are highly respected within royal and para circles, as you have to do the courses to serve with them.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

An Ex Rock Ape too (9yrs) and I fully concurr with this statement there are much better units you could serve with. We rock apes talk a good fight!! all the gear no idea !! most rocks are stupid! Those with any sense joined the Marines!

For a good insight read LIONS, DONKEYS AND DINOSAURS by Lewis Page.... he accurately reflects what most soldiers think of various units/policy and current doctrine, alternately..

just returned from Kandahar with III Sqn, only had fun when we went to helmend or gucci SF jobs.
dont get me wrong i love my corps, but you only get anywhere in the regiment if you go II sqn, then there are quit a few doors open for you like 16 AA BDE, TACP and SFSG. to be fair, the regiment has some of the most profesional soldiers in uk.
as for training the two blokes above probs did there TG course at catterick (aka "the school of hard knocks") i however did mine at honington in the late 90's when it was still reasonably hard, now, like the rest of the armed forces, theres to much red tape around training and health and saftey, which is spread across the whole of the armed forces.
but you will have the best time of your life in the regiment.

I totally second the above, i have had my dealings with the RAF Regt, Parachuting in Canada and other things within the AB Bde. No disrespect but i think you can doo a lot better, And this comment is on a pro level not a digg. You would get a lot out of joining the Royal, same as you would joining the Airborne Brigade. Oh and the main thing is those RAF Wings look W...k LOL, Go get a nice bright blue pair.

Good luck with your choice buddy!!!!!!!

if you want action and enjoy fitness then join the paras or the marines it just depends what you want out of it .. mat

What was it Combat zone argh

I think all you got to do is watch that programme combat zone, with the Raf reg. What a hideous event it made me and my mucka's cringe. My wife looked at me and said is that what it's like in Afghanistan, talking about the disco's burger-king and all the other guff you get at Kandahar. That bloke playing with ID disc's and bayonet saying this is as real as it get's, jes what a stroka. I know he's a nig but still makes the rest of us look like right berks. Not bad mouthing them and iv'e a couple of mates in the Raf reg but if you want to play for real get yourself in the Green zone in the summertime, I can vouch it's simply wonderfull at that time of year.

to be fair mate, kandahar is alot easier than the green zone, but when i was there we were never there to enjoy it, and the regt do op emperor and III sqn have a up and coming tour to helmend. and as for TACP, the regt is TACP, other units are FAC trained, BY THE REGT at JFACTSU, where harry was early last year.

Im an ex rock ape, the worse thing i ever did, all the kit and training you can think of, but do we ever get good jobs...No were over trained gate gaurds that think were the SAS of the RAF. I would join the marines, or the paras any day of the week.

join them, and then if it is not for you,go onto a better regt,i have worked with a few rockapes, some are good and some rubbish, just like any regt,it is the individual who makes it a good regt.
I am an ex booty.

Firstly, Yes am an Ex Rock also (12yrs).
Having read a couple of posts by the previous Ex Rocks, I do not concur. If you are an Ex Rock, your qualified to advise people on joining the RAF Regt, not Marines Para's or any of the other arms of service. Yes I have a healthy respect for the other arms. I do agree the Royal's are a great bunch of troops who have worked with on many occaisions. And highly respect anyone who has the metel to go give them a go. But as an Ex Rock I am more than qualified to recommend them to others. I have had a great time in my carreer with them and could have happily stayed with them for a full 22. But seeking a change and maybe double the money, have left to seek work in CP.
If anyone would like advise on the RAF Regt, by all means message me and I will do my best to help, or if I can't will direct you to the recruitment site on Facebook.
And if anyone wants to get in a pissing contest over beret colour or "The Big 3" farce, feel free to lock yourself in a long drop any decorate the walls with your opinions.

If you want to be a thinking soilder and want some real action, not just patroling round the wire of the main camps join the Rifles.
We are second to none and with 5 "Bats" we are the largest regiment and each Rifles group does a different role so there is plenty to choose form, we also dont have to piss around with heavy drill !!!!.
Ive seen the RAF Reg out here in Afgan and they dont do a dam lot. If you want a trade though listen to the guy who said the engineers, worked with them alot this tour and they do some good stuff. As for FAC everyone can do that now.
Regards Mike
