My son is about to apply to go to Army College at Harrogate and join Royal Artillery. Any info would be good. He wanted light gunner but looked and it seems they will be phased out 2012. What would be a good regt for him to look at?

If he wants a good regiment look at 29 Commando Regiment RA or look at 7 RHA who have the Parachute support role.

Light gun is not being phased out, but there are a lot of changes in 2012 that will affect the regiment such as 40 Field Regiment (The Lowland Gunners) which is currently light gun roled, being disbanded, with 137 (Java) Battery being put under 19 Field Regiment (The Highland Gunners) and then being called the Scottish Artillery Regiment (at the moment but this may change)

A lot of Royal Artillery Regiments are now roled as Drone regiments flying the drones which range from small hand held to large drones.

If he is interested i joining the Royal Regiment of Artillery, contact Larkhill and speak to them down at the Royal School of Artillery.

If he wants a good life but hard working look at 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.

Thanks for the info i will let him know/read this. Might sound stupid but as para support, if the looks at 7 RHA will he have to do the Para course?

If he goes to 7 (Para) RHA, then he will have to do the all arms Para course, if he goes to 29 he will have to do the all arms commando course and then Para course.

However, due to the current climate within the forces and every penny being saved in certain quarters whilst the MOD Squanders in others, then he may take a hell of a while before he gets his wings

Here are the links to the regiments on the British Army Web Site

http://www.army.mod.uk/artillery/units/6798.aspx this is 7 RHA

http://www.army.mod.uk/artillery/units/29_cmdo_regt_ra/default%20.aspx this is 29 Commando Regiment

Both 29 and 7 are the best if hes wanting to be a trail ape, you wouldnt necessarily have to do your jumps course going 29, know plenty of guys who haven't, in saying that, it is looked better on if you get it done.

Tell him to get tabbing though lol

BARB test passed, Light Gunner it is. done his pre 1.5k run in alocated time but can not motivate him to do the miles.

If he is serious about joining up then it's time to put down the X-Box and forget the lazy lie -ins.
Get his arse out with some weight on his shoulders and get some mileage done.

Cardio work and Fartlek training is a must.

Doing it early doors NOW... will pay dividends when he starts to get "Beasted and Thrashed" over either Catterick, Dartmoor, or Salisbury plain.

Get "Boot fit" believe me it will be worth the pain.

But hey don't worry the nice fluffy Bombardier training instructor will see he is tucked up with his Cocoa....;-0

Yes i remember being tucked up by the DS lol

He..He...

Tucked up in the "Stress position" with a broom handle balanced over my knuckles!!!

Drop the broom handle...Fcuking standby!!! ......Beasting ensued.

Ah those were the days.....

But can't thrash em like you use to..PC..Brigade would call it Bullying..;-)

I call it "character building that installs discipline"

He has his offical Fitness test booked on 7th Feb I noticed on Army web site that there is a static weighted bag lift involved. Anybody know what weight it is?
