Serving Legionnaire, will answer any questions!!

We just heard from him. He said he finished at farm and did some cave training. He said he is happy and like it but the training is very hard. He still has about 6 more weeks of training before he gets a reg. maybe in south america or with the parachute reg. Does any one know about that?

Hi Kathywss,
good to hear as your son is well and he liked the training of the FFL.

About the regiment in south america, it's in French Guiana, the name of the town where the Regiment is based is KOUROU. I was myself for 2 years over there, they make a lot of jungle warfare and patrols at the border of Brazil and Surinam.

The Parachute Regiment is in Corsica in the mediterranean sea, south of France, the name of the town where the Regiment is based is CALVI. It's a very good regiment, they was in Afghanistan and Mali too.

Hope this helps, all the best,

MAY

Joining the Legion

Hello Everybody,

Can any still serving or ex Legionnaire's tell me if a previously broken collar bone will exempt me from passing my medical part of the entrance for the FFL? No scews pins or plates were used it is a natural heal though the bone at the point where it broke is now prominent, as it set crookedly, and now appears as a prominent knob along my collar bone.
Any info. Is greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Thank you May, I think he has decided to go to French Guiana-if he is allowed. I just hope he is safe-he really likes what he is doing and has said the work is hard but he is enjoying the training. I have spoken to him several times however not sure if i will be able to speak to him in French Guiana? Maybe you would know? Do you know if he get any time off before he would be sent to French Guiana?
Thanks Kathy

He'll be gone for 2yrs with no leave but will have permission longue duree (PLD) once he gets his 24 pay packets.
Guyane is great but can be problematic if you have a leaning towards coke (in my day it was a major, major hurdle in 3REI) and Generale Piquemal said he was going to sort it (dunno if he did though!).
Plus there's a high chance of picking up tropical diseases and infections but I'm sure he knows what he's letting himself in for.

Hi Kathy,
my pleasure.
Not sure you are able to speak with him through the phone in Guiana, could be a problem if he got a new identity because the military police watching the guys, even if they are in town.
If he didn't got a new identity, he is allowed to give you a call from a phone cabine within the town or maybe from his cell phone too, all depends the security officer of the regiment.
Normally, before the guys would be sent to Guiana, they have to stay in the 1th RE in Aubagne near Marseille for a couple of days or weeks.
No worry about the tropical disease and coke, he will get a good briefing before he join the regiment and another one when he is arrived over there.

Personally, I think the 3th REI in French Guiana is not the best choice for a newcomer. I would choose the parachute regiment in Calvi or the 2th REG in St.Christol because they have more interesting missions in Africa like in Mali, etc.

Hope this helps, best,

MAY

Hi Kzal,
well, to be honest, your chances to be hired with a broken collar bone are very low.....I am not a medic but as far I know this could be a real handicap for passing you medical exam.
Best,

MAY

Hi May, Still don't know where he will go-he joined in January and i guess it takes that long for training. Which is good i feel he is safer.

If you look back through this thread you will find the answers to pretty much all the questions you will have. If you don't, then you should ask specific questions and you will get an answer. :)

The 'séjour' how we call it when you go to regiment out of France now takes 3 years. Small correction.

Jeez! 3 years now rather that 2??
Is that the same for DLEM- that's the only other overseas posting left now isn't it apart from Abu Dhabi for a compagnie tournante?

Every one leaving from this year on, overseas in all french army are going for 3 years.
3. REI, DLEM, and 13.DBLE there are permanent positions. I've been in 13. Last year on tournante. For permanent positions you must have multiple specialisations, just one is not enaugh to apply :)

Cheers for the int mate.
With 13DBLE- has it been disbanded as a regt en totale since they left Djib?
Abu Dhabi is a cie tournante from which unit if there is no treize?
What is the job description in UAE and why do les grenouilles have a presence there, are they being funded by L'Armee de Terre or the Arabs?

No, there is still a demi-brigade.
The toutnants: 2.REP, 2.REI as infantry. There were the artillery guys from 3.RAMA and 35.RI for VBCIs.
We did some GTIA exercises. There is a shooting range that you can shoot from FAMAS to apaches to CESARs at the same time, no limits :)
Where the money comes from?
I don't know. The position there might be geopolitical...

How is the typical day of the legionaire? For one that is not deployed, for example a paratrooper in the 2nd REP or any other regiment.
