Please be friendly to new users, some of which will never have registered on a forum before and may need a little help getting used to how things work. As a security networking forum we need to encourage new members to participate in posting and I encourage you to help new members feel at home.

Cheers Mally

We solemnly promise there will be no taking the mick or undue sarcasm.

...Fingers were crossed behind my back, so don't count !
Quite right, and even if they claim to have served a couple of decades in the special forces and completed an underwater knife fighting course we will still treat them like the most excitement they have ever had is playing Call of Duty.

On a more serious note, I pop into the chat room quite a bit and newbies are welcome to pop in and have a chat if they don't feel confident enough to post on the forum. But do post "Hello" when you come in because if I'm reading another web page it doesn't alert me anyone's there unless they say something.

I must start trying to drop in there more. It's sadly underused recently.

Just an idea, but why don't you, we, us propose a chatathon on a certain topic, get a couple of the mods in, someone like The Sec Advisor who can field questions for us newbies? Limit it to say 6 or any number you choose, just to make it manageable? If you've tried this before and it was a bit lame, pardon the suggestion. Just thought it might be, err fun :)

Sounds like a good idea. A weekly drop-in centre on a pre-advertised topic perhaps.

Exactly LW, appreciate it would take up some time on an experienced operator's part, but it would help some of us target our networking more effectively. Also appreciate it doesn't replace actually getting out and meeting peeps, but a pre-advertised topic would certainly whet their appetite, and there's some learning of info involved from credible sources.

"and completed an underwater knife fighting course"

I stopped offering that training because of the sharks.
it was causing the newbies to lose focus.
But if there are enough sign-ups, I could be talked into doing it again :-)

Actually, I quite like the idea :-).

Problem is the chat feature is Java based... for a security forum it's a massive leaky sieve.

Might be worth looking for a html5, css or php turn based chat system which is safer and less intrusive.

I would suggest one a month is the most we can hope for, at least one mod plus a guest expert
I don't necessarily think we need a mod to be there. Also, I don't think the expert needs to be a guest, there are plenty of forum members who have expertise of some level in various subjects. Fbg could teach us all which knives and forks to use and other such etiquette, some of our foreign members could talk about correct etiquette in other countries, Vis can answer questions about video cameras but we could also have non-security subjects, we've a couple of mountaineers that could answer questions about that, the petrol heads could have a discussion on cars etc.
