Tax???

I am currently doing "contract work" for North American Firm in Aghanistan. The contract is 2 years with 3 months on 1 month off rotation and I have been "advised" to spend no more than 90 days in the Uk when on leave (for tax purposes) However a "friend" has told me that as I have a mortgage and stay there when I am on leave I am still liable to pay tax. The IR website is confusing to say the least but I was advised to complete a P85.
I would be grateful for any advice on this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Soory, forgot to add that I left "full time employment" in the Uk and I am NOT registered as "Self Employed"....

Get in touch with Whittaker and Co, great accountants, good prices and they know their stuff. They'll keep you on the straight and narrow, and more importantly, keep the taxman off your back.

I've heard of other accountants that tell their customers all sorts of rubbish because they misinterprated the rules. The last two years Whittakers have helped me get more tax back than what I've paid in fees, bonus!

I did 3 years in Afghanistan as a self employed contractor before starting in Maritime security. Ring Smailes Goldie Chartered Accountants and ask for Alicia Hobden 01482 326916, she has lots of clients in our situation and really knows her stuff!!

Hope that helps!!!

MAC35 There are loads of guys/girls on here who work overseas, I'm one of them, and my accountant is with Lockett & Co Hereford, used him for over 4 years, its individual on who you use, lots will say use this an that, I know where I stand with everything, my days in an out etc as I mail him when I'm in an out of the country and he updates me on where I am days wise. Also beaware that to gain none residencey you need to clear one full year, more so if you start work after April ie start of tax year, so for that reason you must complete a full year plus before you gain none res, regarding mortgage etc think that is abit of waffle, most where I am have mortages an none have been told that buddy.

Anyway seriously don't worry about the mortgage thing, as adviced if ya flappin bout it then speak to someone, but as long as you don't go over your 90 days theres no comebacks mate.
