They're stealing our jobs!

Surely its against the DPA, its nothing more than using images for entertainment purposes (gambling you will get the most results to win), and allows anyone to have access to the images, which could end up all over the internet.

Any shop stupid enough to have that sign on the door, deserves not only to lose customers (as who would be stupid enough to shop some where your every move is on camera and could end up on some blog) and also reporting to the ICO.

Hi,

I have to agree kenspace, I would be shocked if this actually gets launched and meets DPA and ICO Guidelines. I can see the appeal of this concept but im not sure how they would tie it to be useful. Retail crime happens fast and by the time a person was alerted via the online system the "potential criminal" could already be out the store / location .

Interesting an SIA ticket would be required. Also would be interested to see the bandwidth requirements of video streaming footage to large numbers of subscribers. The technical challenges would be interesting.

I agree with ken its has to be against the data protection act. It makes me angry to even think they would set some web site up like that and let normal members of the public view these images when the likes of the sia charge money for a cctv licence and bang on about data protection. I doubt they will let this web site even get past the first hurdle. But who knows its a crrrraaaazzzy world we live in.

My first thought was what about vigilanti'ism or targeting someone?

The potential is there for someone who is 'playing this game' to either decide they're not going to report it but to deal out their own justice or spot someone innocent who they don't like and learn some of their habits.

Someone somewhere is going to end up watching a camera in a shop/area that is local to them. Whats to stop some thief watching it, making a note that Mrs Smith always walks to get her pension every thursday at 1000. They know how long it takes for her to walk there and back, they know how long the house is empty for!!!

There are many more scenarios we could all come up with, none of which give this idea any merit at all.

I have often been accused of being far too suspicious and distrusting of too many people.
I prefer to think of it as alternative thinking and cautious. :)

I agree with TrackClarity on the technical issues, can you imagine the CCTV operator being swamped with text/email messages? In all that, the real issues or incidents get overlooked.

'An SMS or text message, along with a still image of the alleged crime, is sent to whoever controls the camera. They can then decide whether or not to take action.'

To paste another quote;

'The game has been condemned by civil rights campaigners who claim it will encourage people to spy and snitch on each other.
Charles Farrier, director of the No-CCTV pressure group, said: 'It is an appalling idea for a game and will create a snoopers paradise.
'It is something which should be nipped in the bud immediately. It will not only encourage a dangerous spying mentality by turning crime into a game but also could lead to dangerous civil rights abuses.'

This leads to another potential issue...stalkers, pedophile and similar offenders/deviants. Mull over that...

I dont believe that this is a well thought out project, yet another example of good intentions + bad idea = ?????
