Weapon Holders in the UK?

I would have thought the most obvious targets for theft would be farmers. Most farmers have a shotgun, most use it to shoot rabbits on their own land, so its not hard to figure out who has a gun. The time it would take for police to respond in rural areas, would make an alarm pointless.

Perhaps the best deterrent would be much longer sentences for possession of an illegal firearm, but then comes another problem. If you give people 10 years for possession, they're more likely to use it to help them escape rather than getting caught. Even if there's a minimum of 20 years for using it, the sort of people that will gamble on committing a crime will take the gamble, rather than face the 10 years.

Banning guns doe nothing to stop criminals having them. All it does is remove the means for innocents to defend themselves. Criminals do not think of the consequences when they commit crime. If they did, they wouldn't do it. The threat of long incarceration does not deter them because they think that they wont be caught

plus alot of weapons also come into the UK with the mil lads this has been happening for a long time.

"the recent handgun and grenade attacks and killing of two police officers has again highlighted the smuggling of weapons into the UK by returning members of the armed forces"

All,

I remember reading this on the BBC website and it includes some interesting "facts" courtesy of the Home Office.

BBC News - Almost 3,000 guns lost or stolen in UK, figures reveal

Hope it is of some interest to the conversation.

My opinion is that the security of individual properties should bemore rigorously checked and more often not just on issue and renewal. In the Avon and Somerset area the civvy that use to visit is now changed to a couple of armed officers who were more specific and questioning the security I had in place.

Monitored alarm!? Reaction time too slow and the responding officers will more than likley not be armed. I'd hate to see another intance of what happened in Manchester.

Stay safe all

Much less now they all get searched and all cargo gets plundered. You can never stop it totally but it predominantly happens in the early stages when the infrastructure isnt there to check them. Doesn't stop people whinging when they are searched and feel untrusted.

Do you really think that squaddies bring back firearms back and sell them to criminals? Doubtful, more a memento than anything.

The Officers in GMP wouldnt have been saved even if they were armed I dont think.

According to the latest judges comments WE CAN SHOOT THEM.
Glory be, a judge with some common sense at last.
If he stand for parliament, he'll get my vote.

I dont think he said we are ok to shoot them, he disregarded being shot in mitigation and said we should be able to defend ourself, but legally we can do that already, all be it a really weak law and that even the most cautious house owner would end up spending some time in a cell if they actually did it. But good on that judge.

Its tragic when you chase them out your house and they 'fall over' and bang their head isnt it! :)

Non taken, I have personally taken items of mil lads in the early days of Iraq who were intending to bring them back, one was carrying an anti personnel mine, CLOWN!

It does happen but like I said now the infrastructure is there its much harder. Its the loggies who are in a position to move items not so much the lads on the ground.

You can put a uniform on them but it doesnt make them respectable individuals. Why do you think we have Military Police.

Most certainly no offence taken.

Putting on a cherry beret doesn't make them respectable either. I once had some "stuff" removed from an iso container on the way back from a deployment, by the RMP, that was destined to put some beer token behind the bar for the Sqn. I later found out that the RMP detachment used it for their own beer tokens!! Tossers!! :-)
