A career change

Hello, i did try and post in here yesterday but it just seems to of disappeared. . . so apologies if I've missed something and my post is elsewhere.
Without shedding too much unnecessary detail, I'm interested in becoming a PI. I'm 26 and no unfortunately don't have any prior experience that would help in this line of work. . . A problem i'm sure.
I've had a quick look on here and i've seen the recommendations come flying in for the 11 day course for PI/Surveillance so i'll obviously get enrolled on that when i can.

However. . and this is where i need some help/guidance.
Firstly the course is very expensive as i'm sure people are well aware. Is it possible do to assist other PI businesses just to: 1. get my foot in the door and 2. raise the extra money needed to go on the course. I know it seems daft but naturally it would be a win win situation. I would hopefully be able to do this around my full time job as i do shift work which does offer me a bit of flexibility. Any thoughts on this?

Secondly, once i do have the necessary skills/equipment. . . Is it worth going freelance and helping any and all businesses that need help in the area? i'm not actually that fussed about setting up my own business per se as by the seems of it there are enough as it is? Any thoughts and experience on this matter at all?
Thirdly and here comes the further optimism, is there much room to specialise? What avenues are these? Are they lucrative? Are there many specialist jobs available if so?

Please before anyone chastises me, i am aware there is a wealth of knowledge on the internet, but sometimes it best to ask the people in the business themselves, the information can be a bit vague sometimes and i'd prefer to hear it from people in the know, so please be patient and if you don't want to answer then so be it. But any and all help would of course be welcome and appreciated.

Hopefully i've not missed anything out and fingers crossed someone can help me sooner rather than later so i can get the ball rolling.

Thanks

Ben

So, what have you been doing in the last 5 years?
Where and for how long?
Next time, don't write such a long post, as it can get boring.
"This is what I have been doing, and my last couple of jobs were..."
My hobby is ... but I also do this on the side...
Any and all comments appreciated.
------------------------
The position/job you are looking for is a "Hurry up and wait" job, so get used to it now.
Spend time writing. Write half a page on "What I did yesterday" include where you went; who you saw that 'stood out' what were they wearing, what colour clothes; were they left handed or right? Did they look happy? Did they notice you? when you went to the Mall, what vehicles were nearest the entrance? Where the same ones there when you left. Did you see anyone who didn't seem to fit it with the rest of the people? Write it all down, and do that for a week or more. Get into the habit of 'clocking everybody, every where you go, but don't stare at people, 'notice' them, remember them. etc etc. That was part of the boring job you are looking for... Good luck.

Have you actually rang up any of the training providers and asked for their advice and pointers?

I am always happy to help.

Hi

Ok well i've worked in 2 different call centres for the past 5 years, so no nothing really related to this line of work.
One involves vehicle recovery (my current job) and the other was for a healthcare company.
My hobbies involve driving, photography (although very much the newbie) and going for walks/visiting places to list the main ones.
At the end of the day i had a few questions i was hoping to be answered and that was the main bulk of the post. So apologies if it was long winded/boring but it covered what i wanted to ask.

Peter this is the first place i've actually asked for advice so no not as yet, but if it helps then i'll perhaps call yourselves at ISS as the course i'm interested in doing is there. Unless of course you are happy to just help me on here?

Thanks

Ben

Here's a link Tom from 'the security advisor' sent me, interesting reading, I agree with about 90% of this, anyway it makes sense, start here. What To Do In The Event Of A Terrorist Attack

Had my son out for a game of snooker on Xmas eve (he's 15), then I quizzed him, how many tables were there? How many people in, including people playing machines in the next room? What were the two guys wearing at the table next to the front door? Where were the exits? Where were the fire extinguishers, he couldn't answer one but next time he will I'll bet, just first lesson in situational awareness.

(by the way he beat me at snooker, wee bugger)

You're right buddy, I didn't even see the balls, luring him into a false sense of security. (excuse the pun but we're never off duty) 50p a game next time.

Yep, I wanted to be a brain surgeon when I was younger, course was 11 days so couldn't be bothered, (joke) seriously I have more courses under my belt than any normal fella would, when I have a time off I do a course 'cos I'm bored, even have some kitchen hygene ones that I'll never need and a disability awareness one but EXPERIENCE mate. Peter will steer you right, you've came to the right place.

Appreciate the feedback, i'll give Peter a call.

By the way sorry to everyone if they think i've been ignoring them etc i have responded as soon as i've seen the message but being a newbie all my posts have to be checked and approved by the Mods. . . so i have been responding, just waiting for the posts to be put on - as will happen to this post also.

But anyway, thanks everyone for the feedback, will get in touch with Peter but any other pointers/tips are always welcome.

Thanks

Ben
