Best first aid kit?

Can anyone suggest a goo, compact but comprehensive, durable first aid kit for use in the field; talking desert, tropical and urban.

Something reliable, high quality and easily restockable. Bonus points for some form of medications storage.

This is too much of a personal thing to ask. I've never seen a kit that has everything in that I need or want. My advise would be create your own. Kit that would be required in the desert wouldn't be needed in the urban environment etc.

Agreed. There are alot of kits on the market; many of them branded as "Remote" or "Mountain" first aid kits. All of them are equally average.

The problem is that shops and manufacturers will sell you what you think you need, and most peoples basis of they need is based on what we have always had. This is why you still see first aid kits with 6 safety pins but only one pair of gloves. micropore tape is a favourite; it is 'surgical' and therefore exotic but practically it is rubbish compared to something like sleek or transpore. And don't get me started on those little tin scissors that seem to rust on contact with the earths atmosphere.

Have a think about what you need, find a decent bag and stock it to YOUR specification.

Totally agree with the above. Also think about what first aid skills you have and kit your bag appropriately, medical kit can be very expensive and if your carrying things that you don't need and/or don't know how to use then its just wasted money not to mention excess weight to carry.

We supply lots of first aid kits to people using them in isolated areas and I really do not think any two are ever the same. Except for the guy who has a spec and buys those kits by the dozen! :)

Things I would put in a kit (just for conversation sake):-

Gloves, several pairs each in their own packet.
A bag valve mask (not first aid but this is my list).
A disposable suction device (as BVM).
Some airways (as BVM).
A chest seal.
A tourniquet.
Some big and medium dressings and some gauzes.
A pair of rescue shears.
A roll of SAM splint.
An instant ice pack (might have to remove and restock if flying).
Some tapes.
Some wound closure strips.
A procedure pack.
Some tipet sachets and saline pods.
A stethoscope & sphyg.
A foil blanket, glucose sweets and a couple of glow sticks.

But as has been said, anyone experienced is going to have their own list. Some bigger and some smaller than this one.
