Hospital emergency rooms, police stations and divorce courts.;););)

Ok, question with a question; As a generalisation why do people choose to become a Door Supervisor?

Good question.I was security manager for a firm which , as a side line, ran a few clubs in Coventry. I was asked by my boss to cover a few doors for him. Enjoyed the work, the craic, working with people you could trust with your life (literally)

The rest is history :)

Mostly antisocial working environment, long antisocial hours, fatigue, and stress.

After a good long apprenticeship you will progress to team leader.

After many years in that role you may start your own company or become management.

If at some point you decide to change careers and go into CP you'll have to retrain after gaining knowledge, skills and experience that are relevant and useful to any team, client or principle that may hire you.

As is written by most of the old lags on the forum - Get an education, get experience, get training, get a plan, and get focus. Without these you will not get anywhere.

Because training company's advertise it and rock bottom prices and say you can earn £15PH.
Plus people seem to think its easy.

As an answer to OPs question. DS work can lead to what ever you want it to, just put in the time, effort, and money.

Good luck on your Door Supervision course!
I hope you get a good instructor as the first introduction to being a DS can be brutal and unexpected depending on your training and perception of the job.
As polarserv international points out it can lead to a quick visit to many unwanted places.
If you are serious about using DS employment as a stepping stone in the security business i can only concur with TacMedic1 and his advise on education without it, you wont go anywhere.
Making a career in security can be very eventful !!!! That is why we strive to make it uneventful and mundane.
Stay Safe.

Hi Pigeon,

I started on the doors for extra money but very quickly became Supervisor for a student union complex with 18 DS. Four years later I was Regional Manager for the company and only gave that up to do other things. I am now Area Supervisor at weekends only giving support to the Operations Manager and the full time Supervisor on Friday and Saturday nights.

You decide where you want to be in 5 years and work back from there to see what steps / training etc you need to get there. Write it down with dates when certain things have to be done by and review your goals everyday. Be flexible as life has a habit of intervening on the best laid plans but follow through and set new goals to get you there.

All the best,

David

Thanks for the advice lads, I,ll keep you all up to speed with when i do my training and eventually get on the ladder!

i hold my hands up when i first started out i wanted to do it for the same reason everyone else does it...for the adrenaline rush the women and the status but how very quickly i learned this wasnt the case. dont get me wrong you do get the ladies and the adrenaline rush but is not a bed of roses you do get people being sick on you people spitting on you you WILL get the crap beaten out of you at some point. this is a job where you learn from your mistakes and have to learn from them very quickly. unfortunatly being a DS is like learning to drive only once youve past your test do you really learn how to drive. all i can say is dontbe naieve and think its easy. my advice for progression:turn up to work early looking sharp smart and presentable try and be the best at what you do.... being a DS is about customer service be polite listen and then advise. also take as many extra courses you can for example physical intervention training first aid personal license apr and mechanical restraint..but bear in mind to check with your employer and venue if they condone the use of this type of equipment. do as much as you can to make yourself stand out from the rest!!! and finally get as much experience as you can as this will be invaluble to you later on in your career. just dont let your ego get in the way and certainly dont think your invincible or you will find your self on the path of losing your licence and a criminal record!!! hope this helped!!
