hi im ex RM trying to get into marsec i've sent my cv to shit loads of companys and not really having much joy. ive got the sso qual plus the stcw95 sea survival. Does ringing the companys up on a weekly basis have any affect or does it just make them threaders. your help would be most appreciated.

cheers gaz

Bandook,

Mate im ex Royal (LC) getting your foot in the door is always hard but keep at it and something will come of your hard work.
If i was you limit yourself to a few companys at a time when emailing as alot of them all at some point do different things within the MARSEC industry from transits, coxswain work or even Security watch officers on board security vessels or client vessels.
After you have sent an email i would say always ring them to make sure they got the email a few days later nothing much just a confirmation, your name on there thoughts after a conversation with you may land you a job (proven time and time again).

Your an ex royal marine so this always helps, i have nothing against Securwest and have not worked for them BUT there reputation is not the greatest amongest the consultants, I'm not saying dont ring just be abit choosy about the companys you work for some are not great for money, and some leave you out on a branch.

Drum-Cussac, IMSA, Libertine, MUSC are some good companys mate to start with and all do a varied range of jobs for all skills.
Dont bullshit on your CV, and dont try to dazzle the companys, again what you have done in the past (ex Marine) stands for alot and you already have 2 qualifications that will hold you in good stead.

Minimal Risk are doing a maritime job at present and they have a high turn over of lads (gain some maritime experiance then leave) its not the best paid but it does have all the gear you need and a few of the lads (TL) have a wealth of knowledge give them a try to get that foot in the door?!?!?!

More then happy to pass on alittle more info refs qualifications and companys the rest as they say is up to you!!!!!

Good post Bevs.
From a personal standpoint, can we get away from this Ex Royal/Bootneck bit, you ain't dead yet, you are former......................LOL

John

Gonna jump on the band wagon here! In true Bootneck fashion I'm selling every possession I have to fund the courses, I have the sso booked for next month and have doc letter, eng1 and jabs is this enough or do I deffo need sctw 95 as well? Only I've sold my kidneys already and not much left other than my .... ! Feeling ya pain Horts

I'm hoping that afternoon nearly 2 years Norts has got some work!!! Yes, do your STCW although if you've had a draft on board ship the chances are you will have done BSSC or ISC which you can get converted to STCE through HMS EXCELLENT(the contact details are on previous threads). Good luck but don't sell the house!!!

Try doing the courses in Sunny Australia Gents - we get royally ripped for the quals down here - and if you do them elsewhere you can't get an Aussie Seafarers book - catch 22 I'm afraid. It would be great if we could get a British Seafarers book - that way we could do the courses OS and save mega $ - the queens face is still on our dosh so you think she would hook us up with the books lol least she can do :) Government paper pushers here making life very expensive to get into the maritime industry - and its organizationally arrogant to not acknowledge overseas training if its from a reputable provider, makes for a very closed market - thus the obscene pricing.
