Getting started in maritime security

Hi all,

my first post here, (and I may be wasting my time)

I want to get into maritime security But have zero shipping experience and I don't have a military background..... On the plus side I have been in the security industry mainly front line (and CP before sia came in) for 20+ years and have a DS licence.

I am very keen to attend courses etc but don't know which one or ones I need to do.

I am going down this route as I live in a port town and the chance of getting work in this area seems better than CP work for where I live.

Any help or advice will be much appreciated

Regards Rich

I think the best advice mate is to forget all about it!!

Use the search button on here and you'll find various threads ref maritime work.....you probably have more chance of meeting Moses to be honest....

Really I wouldnt bother, you will NOT get into maritime security work, there are hundreds of guys WITH all the pieces of paper and with military backgrounds who are not getting any work. read the other posts. do not waste your money on courses, you will never get any work, most maritime companies are asking for minimum of 6 years military experience.
The only caveat to that would be that some UK ferry companies do employ security.

Rich,

No previous Maritime experience, no hostile envoiriment experience and I presume no military experience, to be brutal mate yep you are wasting your time, and my time having to explain this and any one else's time that happens to reply to this thread as there are many people like yourself coming on here and asking the same old stuff....Sorry!!

winger, too true. not to point the 50cal at the new-bee but reading even a few of the MarSec posts would tell ANYBODY that MarSec bubble has well and truly burst and the gravy train has already left.

It certainly has that's why I'm heading back to Trumpton!

At least one company is upfront.

"Due to the number of redundancies from other companies we have been inundated with new employee requests !

For this reason we are not looking at interviewing for any further positions at present !"

maybe not what you are looking for ,but try to get on cruise liners.they employ security from all backgrounds. but its not anti piracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rich1262,

Mate even tho you have no experience, no military background this doesn't anyone, I myself have worked with a few individuals that have broken the mould and don't a-dear to the normal "must have tick list".
BUT please be aware that what most of the lads have said above is the shitty truth for the non-military lads amongst us, but this really shouldn't be anything new to you if you have had the experience within the security sector before, SSO and PFSO roles don't normally ask for an ex-military background especially when working fully in the civvie sector i.e. cruise liners like ronald has suggested, plus there are many different roles within the maritime sector and its not just transits, Security OOW, Offshore security managers, coxswain work, super yacht deliver / security, super yacht crewing........the list really does go on.

Regards
