Hi

I am looking for a job shadow opening, for free of course. I have not active surveillance work experience but am looking to gain a wealth of knowledge from a old hand. I have not got any active surveillance work experience but am looking to gain a wealth of knowledge from an old hand. I understand that these opportunities are extremely rare, I have higher education and am eager to learn,

Have you done a recognised course?

No not yet, I was looking at doing the ISS 10 day Betec, I could do with some more info really, I am very perplexed by all the different courses to be honest, they seem rather short for what I would consider trained!! Am I also right in thinking there are no governing body yet for surveillance work. So in theory a "apprenticeship" of some sort could maybe take place with a experienced operative?

You need to gain the basics before anything else and get a course completed if this is what you want to do. Are you from the military? You will not go far wrong with ISS

When Peter's finished with you, drop me a pm.

You're not that far way, and I'll introduce you to some of the toys.

NB: That applies to any of you guys that want an intro to some of the techy hardware.

I just moved this thread to The Pub, so it's easier for members to comment.

Robson, you'd better make a few more posts and get your pm's working, people are trying to get in touch with you ! :)

As much as I like the idea of the Visioneer UK World Tour, I fear my crowd pulling abilities would necessitate a venue the size of a phone box !

I'm happy to bring a few toys along to anybody that's running a training course, and give a session much as I did at the last CPW meet.

...if there's a bar open. :)

I seem to have a great dislike of the 'I'll work for free' mentality that seems all too regular these days.
I don't know it just smacks me as fundamentally wrong.
I admire your determination, but, I feel it belittles others hard earned efforts.
Sure they are looking for an opportunity, but if working for nothing is the best you have to offer, then I just feel those who would take you on, would be doing it for the wrong reasons, and their attitude and possibly skill set would not be worth having maybe.
I will work for free, has never been something that appeals or encourages me, even as an employer, it was never an attractive prospect.
The thought of it alone scares me, and would shame me.
Really trying not to be personal, but there has to be, and are better ways surely.
If you have value, best people pay you your worth is my thoughts.
so hence if you'll work for nothing, my evaluation of you is that you'd be worthless.
(not you specifically, just in general).

I actually completely understand what you are saying, I was just following what “seems” to be standard entry level protocol. Unless you have military or LE experience, I can not see any other way of getting a break. I am all open to suggestions if you have some?

I am hoping my actions are viewed as determination rather then me being un employable. Its seems all trades are becoming “red taped”, paper trails and correct courses etc are going into overdrive. Take my previous field for example “Engineering”, I am a incorporated engineer and I have met loads of engineers that had the “right” bit of paper and amazing CV’s did that make them good engineers? not at all! Some were terrible!!

I definitely agree with reaching a base level of knowledge, but I believe your true working knowledge will be gained through working with an experienced operative

Bear in mind that you're asking to shadow someone on a job. Considering the likelihood of an untrained guy blowing the job by doing something dumb (because they don't know any better), unless you've done a decent course, passed with flying colours and are in a position for someone like Peter to confirm you know what you're doing, you've got zero chance of being shown the ropes during the course of a paying live job.
